A novel ITGB8 transcript variant sustains ovarian cancer cell survival through genomic instability and altered ploidy on a mutant p53 background.

Background: Transcript variants and protein isoforms are central to unique tissue functions and maintenance of homeostasis, in addition to being associated with aberrant states such as cancer, where their crosstalk with the mutated tumor suppressor p53 may contribute to genomic instability and chromosomal rearrangements. We previously identified several novel splice variants in ovarian cancer RNA-sequencing datasets; herein, we aimed to elucidate the biological effects of the Integrin Subunit Beta 8 variant (termed pITGB8-205).

Methods: Resolution of the full-length sequence of pITGB8-205 through rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE-PCR).

Idiopathic spontaneous lesser sac haematoma: a perplexing case of abdominal apoplexy.

A 37-year-old woman presented with a 3-hour history of back pain, nausea and vomiting and an episode of syncope. A fluid collection in the lesser sac was detected on ultrasound and CT scan. Emergency laparoscopy and subsequent laparotomy were performed and a large blood clot was evacuated from the lesser sac.

Clinical need-directed blood tests: a step in saving the NHS?

Background: Unnecessary blood tests are estimated to contribute to 25% of wastage in the National Health Service. The aim of this study was to assess the financial implication of clinical need-focused blood tests guided by a senior clinician in a district general hospital.
