Polyketide synthases (PKSs) are crucial multidomain enzymes in diverse natural product biosynthesis. Parrots use a type I PKS to produce a unique pigment called psittacofulvin in their feathers. In domesticated budgerigars and lovebirds, the same amino acid substitution (R644W) within malonyl/acetyltransferase (MAT) domain of this enzyme has been shown to cause the blue phenotype with no psittacofulvin pigmentation, proposing a strong evolutionary constraint on the mechanism.

Introduction: People with stroke are at risk of poor oral hygiene caused by neurological deficits, which can be motor, sensory, or cognitive. Good oral hygiene has been shown to reduce adverse events and improve the patient's quality of life. Although nurses recognize the benefits of oral hygiene, evidence shows that this area of care is frequently overlooked.

Article Synopsis
  • Runners who don't allow enough recovery time after training may be at a higher risk for injuries due to fatigue and altered movement patterns.
  • A study looked at how different running intensities affect lower-limb joint movements and coordination during a single-leg squat in 30 healthy runners.
  • Immediate and longer-term changes showed that coordination patterns became less adaptive (more regular) after moderate and high-intensity runs, but traditional kinematic analysis did not effectively capture these changes.

Atmospheric nitrous oxide (NO) is a potent greenhouse gas, with long atmospheric residence time and a global warming potential 273 times higher than CO. NO emissions are mainly produced from soils and are influenced by biotic and abiotic factors that can be substantially altered by anthropogenic activities, such as land uses, especially when unmanaged natural ecosystems are replaced by croplands or other uses. In this study, we evaluated the spatial variability of NO emissions from croplands (maize, soybean, wheat, and sugar cane crops), paired with the natural grasslands or forests that they replaced across a wide environmental gradient in Argentina, and identified the key drivers governing the spatial variability of NO emissions using structural equation modeling.

Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by malformations of the cerebral cortex that often cause drug-resistant epilepsy. In this study, we performed multi-omics single-nuclei profiling to map the chromatin accessibility and transcriptome landscapes of FCD type II, generating a comprehensive multimodal single-nuclei dataset comprising 61,525 cells from 11 clinical samples of lesions and controls. Our findings revealed profound chromatin, transcriptomic, and cellular alterations affecting neuronal and glial cells in FCD lesions, including the selective loss of upper-layer excitatory neurons, significant expansion of oligodendrocytes and immature astrocytic populations, and a distinct neuronal subpopulation harboring dysmorphic neurons.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive therapeutic approach that has shown promising results in recent years, particularly in the dermatological clinical treatment of several pathologies, including neoplastic skin diseases. In light of the recent discovery of the photosensitizing properties of a water-soluble group of amino-based flavylium dyes, research efforts have led to the development of a novel synthetic dye with two diethylamino moieties in its structure, 7,4'-di(diethylamino)flavylium (7,4'diN(Et)). This dye was tested as a potential photosensitizer for PDT of skin cancer.

The anatomical connection between latissimus dorsi (LD), thoracolumbar fascia, and contralateral gluteus maximus (GM) enables myofascial force transmission (MFT) between the shoulder, trunk, and hip. This study investigates whether regular sports practice, specifically running, influences this MFT pathway. Given the potential changes in tissue stiffness from sports practice and the importance of this property for MFT, we hypothesize that runners may exhibit greater MFT between the LD and GM, resulting in altered passive properties of the lumbar and hip regions during LD contraction.

Objective: Fasting insulin and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index are relatively simple and reliable noninvasive markers of insulin resistance (IR). Given the relevance of correctly diagnosing IR, we emphasize the importance of establishing reliable reference intervals (RIs) for these markers. This study aimed to determine the RIs of fasting insulin and HOMA-IR index in adults living in Rio de Janeiro and, secondarily, to verify potential RI differences between sexes.

Parrots produce stunning plumage colors through unique pigments called psittacofulvins. However, the mechanism underlying their ability to generate a spectrum of vibrant yellows, reds, and greens remains enigmatic. We uncover a unifying chemical basis for a wide range of parrot plumage colors, which result from the selective deposition of red aldehyde- and yellow carboxyl-containing psittacofulvin molecules in developing feathers.

  • Acromelanism is a type of albinism seen in various vertebrates, where mutations in the TYR gene affect melanin production, leading to specific hair or feather color patterns.* -
  • This study focused on identifying the genetic cause of the acromelanistic "pearl" canary and determined that a mutation in the TYR gene likely results in this phenotype.* -
  • The findings suggest that similar acromelanistic traits in other bird species may also be linked to mutations in the TYR gene, similar to what is observed in mammals.*

Cancer is the second most deadly disease worldwide, and the most traditional approaches such as chemotherapy still face limitations associated to drug dosage and off-target side effects. To address these issues, we propose the simultaneous administration of 4-Nitrochalcone (4NC) and Doxorubicin (DOX) using beeswax based nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs). The co-encapsulation of 4NC and DOX in the beeswax based NLCs was performed using the water/oil/water double emulsion technique in association with the melt dispersion approach.

Like many insects, bumblebees use polarized light (PL) to orient and navigate. The celestial PL pattern is strongest when the sun is close to the horizon, during the dim light of dawn and dusk. In the dim light, the sensitivity of the compound eyes may not be sufficient for detecting PL or landmarks, and it has previously been hypothesized that bumblebees rely on PL from their more sensitive ocelli to navigate at dawn and dusk.
