The rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) contains neurons involved in tonic and reflex control of arterial pressure. We describe the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and anesthetics injected into the RVLM of conscious and urethane (1.2 g/kg, iv) anesthetized Wistar rats (300-350 g).

This community-based survey estimates the annual incidence of non-fatal work-related injuries in adolescents and describes their characteristics. Using a random area sampling design, 2,513 households were selected from the city of Salvador, capital of Bahia State, Northeast Brazil. The study population included 361 young people 10 to 20 years of age who answered individual questionnaires on socio-demographic, occupational, and health data.

Exploratory and descriptive study with the following objectives: to identify the nursing students' feelings related to the undergraduate course and their perception towards the nursing profession. After the four-year course, 57.4% of students perceived nursing in a positive way as a profession for the future, valued, recognised, compensating even with some limitations.

This study evaluates the cardiovascular and respiratory effects evoked by hypertonic sodium chloride solution (HSS) and the possible interactions of these effects with scorpion toxin (TX) or veratridine (V). Groups 1 (1 mL/kg, rapid), 2 (4 mL/kg, rapid), and 3 (4 mL/kg, slow) were used for comparison of HSS administered by rapid or slow injection. HSS (4 mL/kg) was injected after bilateral vagotomy (group 4) or administration of atropine (group 5).

The net absorbable amount of pamidronate (APD), according to AUC values assessed in blood, in the customary dose interval of 24 hours, was found to be similar in 8 healthy young volunteers, who received single doses of 3 capsules of 100 mg APD (AUC0-24 = 510.3 +/- 91.5 micrograms/L x h-1) and 2 tablets of 150 mg (AUC0-24 = 580.

We report a case of a 49-year-old woman diagnosed with primary Sjögrens Syndrome (pSS) who was submitted to extensive neuropsychobiological assessment. Examination revealed a Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) Full Scale IQ of 97 with no Verbal/Performance IQ discrepancy and performance below estimated premorbid levels on arithmetic skills, visual tracking, naming and delayed paired associate learning/memory. CT scans of the brain were normal.

Reliable data regarding the efficacy of different schemes of triple therapy for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in our country, are not available. Patients with Helicobacter pylori infection and non-ulcer dyspepsia or active peptic ulcer disease were randomized in three different groups for therapy with, omeprazole 20 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg and amoxicillin 1000 mg, twice daily for one week (OCA 1, 40 patients) and the same treatment but for two weeks in a second group (OCA 2, 40 patients). The third group received omeprazole 20 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg and metronidazole 500 mg twice daily during one week (OCM, 40 patients).

Groups of animals (Wistar rats) were fed with rations doped with uranyl nitrate at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 100 ppm. The uranium content in the ashes of the organs was measured by the neutron-fission track counting technique.

A single vessel procedure using a focused microwave oven is proposed for biological sample preparation with nitric acid vapour under atmospheric pressure. A laboratory-made PTFE support vessel equipped with four cups that received the samples was adapted to fit on the microwave glass vessel. Biological samples (30 mg) were directly weighed into these PTFE cups followed by the addition of 150 microliters of water or H2O2.

In this study we used a method that permits bilateral or unilateral microinjections of drugs into the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) of conscious, freely moving rats. There is only limited information about how sympathetic vasomotor tone is maintained by premotor RVLM neurons in conscious animals. It has long been known that glycine microinjection into the RVLM region leads to a decrease in blood pressure (BP) in anesthetized animals.

A well-known action of nitric oxide (NO) is to stimulate the soluble form of guanylyl cyclase, evoking an accumulation of cyclic GMP in target cells. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of inhibition of guanylyl cyclase dependent on NO during cardiovascular responses induced by L-glutamate and S-nitrosoglutathione (SNOG) microinjected into the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) of awake rats. Three days before the experiments, adult male Wistar rats (280 to 320 g) were anesthetized for implantation of guide cannulas to the desired stereotaxic position (AP=-2.

The present work shows an antinociceptive and dose-dependent effect of shark cartilage hydrosoluble fraction (HF) on writhing and formalin tests in mice. The effect was not altered by thalidomide, a known inhibitor of tumor necrosis factor-alfa (TNF-alfa) synthesis. Similarly, the antinociceptive effect did not change in the presence of naloxone, indicating that the opioid system is not involved.

Bisphosphonates are a group of osteotropic substances able to modulate bone metabolism in different ways. They all display similar pharmacokinetic characteristics when administered in proportional dosages and assessed by similar methods. With the exception of olpadronate which is soluble in water, bisphosphonates have poor solubility, and may easily precipitate in the digestive media.

The results of a prospective study that compared the short term effects on skeletal bone of oral alendronate, transdermal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and two combined regimens with both medications are reported. Ninety six posmenopausal women with osteopenia (WHO classification) in lumbar spine or femoral neck measured by DEXA (table 1) were included in 4 therapeutic groups: Group I (n:19): 17 beta-Estradiol 50 micrograms daily transdermally/medroxiprogesterone 2.5 mg orally per day; Group II (n:42): alendronate 10 mg/day orally; Group III (n:15): HRT + alendronate 10 mg/day and Group IV (n:20): HTR + alendronate 5 mg/day.

We have determined the effects of mercury and cadmium on the creatine kinase activity of the electric organ of Electrophorus electricus (L.) which catalyses the transphosphorylation reaction between phosphocreatine and magnesium adenosine-5'-di-phosphate and has essential sulfhydryl groups. The kinetic effects of these heavy metals, which have high affinity for sulfhydryl groups, on the creatine kinase activity were analysed with the three reaction components: phosphocreatine, adenosine-5'-di-phosphate and magnesium.

rSMT3, a tonin like angiotensin II generating enzyme present in rSMG presents a potent oxytocic effect on the isolated rat uterus, which was blocked by a B2 bradykinin receptor antagonist. Under optimal conditions of pH, rSMT3 liberates kinin at rate 19-fold greater than angiotensin II.

Two enzymes with tonin-like activity, designated rSMT3 and rSMT4, were purified from rat submandibular glands and another, rPT1, was obtained from the prostate. The three enzyme fractions hydrolysed angiotensin I, angiotensinogen (AG) and synthetic AG(1-14) to form angiotensin II. With angiotensin I as substrate, pH optima were 6.
