Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two pain management techniques, erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and quadratus lumborum block (QLB), in patients undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy, focusing on reducing opioid use and pain levels.
  • Both ESPB and QLB significantly reduced opioid consumption and pain scores compared to a control group in the postoperative period, showing effectiveness as pain management strategies.
  • Although both techniques were beneficial, no significant differences were found in opioid usage or pain scores between ESPB and QLB groups, indicating that either method could be suitable for reducing opioid dependence after surgery.

The cervical plexus block (CPB) has been used for a long time for both analgesia and anesthesia in carotid endarterectomy and thyroid operations. To be unfamiliar with the technique and its perceived difficulty, potential risks, and possible adverse effects such as intravascular injection has limited broader use before the practical use of ultrasound. We hypothesize that the cervical plexus block can provide adequate anesthesia in tracheostomy cases and provide excellent anesthesia comfort when combined with a translaryngeal block.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) belongs to the Bacillus cereus (Bc) group, well known as an etiological agent of foodborne outbreaks (FBOs). Bt distinguishes itself from other Bc by its ability to synthesize insecticidal crystals. However, the search for these crystals is not routinely performed in food safety or clinical investigation, and the actual involvement of Bt in the occurrence of FBOs is not known.

Anesthetic management of patients with pericardial tamponade is challenging. A 65-year-old man diagnosed with small-cell lung carcinoma and bilateral malignant pleural effusion in the lungs and pericardial effusion was scheduled for pericardial-window-opening surgery. The severely compromised lung function of the patient led to an anesthetic plan of ultrasound-guided serratus anterior plane block combined with an intercostal block.

Purpose: Lumbar puncture (LP) is one of the most common procedures performed in medicine. The aim of this prospective study is to determine the success rate of LP in lateral decubitus with 45-degree head-up tilt position, and compare it with traditional positions like sitting and lateral decubitus.

Methods: Three hundred and thirty patients between 25 and 85 years of age who had undergone abdominal, urologic, and lower limb extremities surgeries were enrolled and 300 patients were divided into three different groups.

Purpose: We hypothesized that, after axillary block, positioning the patient in a lateral position with the injected side down and simultaneously in a 20° Trendelenburg position will increase the success rate and quality of the block.

Methods: Fifty patients with chronic renal failure (ASA 2-3) scheduled for arteriovenous fistula surgery were included in this study. In all patients, 30-40 ml of 0.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of epidural levobupivacaine on recovery from vecuronium-induced neuromuscular block. Ninety patients undergoing lower abdominal surgery were randomised into two groups after an epidural test dose: the epidural group (n = 45) received a bolus of 15 ml of 0.5% levobupivacaine whereas the control group (n = 45) did not.

Background: There are limited data to determine the impact of subarachnoid blockade with local anesthetics on perioperative pulmonary function. The effects of local anesthetics used in spinal anesthesia are very important in terms of respiratory function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of bupivacaine versus levobupivacaine on pulmonary function in patients with COPD undergoing urologic surgery.

Background: Pain and other sensations from an amputated or absent limb, called phantom pain and phantom sensations, are well-known phenomena.

Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the effects of anesthetic techniques on phantom pain, phantom sensations, and stump pain after lower limb amputation.

Methods: Ninety-two patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I to III were analyzed for 1 to 24 months after lower limb amputation in this retrospective study.

Association genetics is a powerful method to track gene polymorphisms responsible for phenotypic variation, since it takes advantage of existing collections and historical recombination to study the correlation between large genetic diversity and phenotypic variation. We used a collection of 375 maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) inbred lines representative of tropical, American, and European diversity, previously characterized for genome-wide neutral markers and population structure, to investigate the roles of two functionally related candidate genes, Opaque2 and CyPPDK1, on kernel quality traits.

Background And Objective: The haemodynamic responses during extubation can cause complications after open-heart surgery. In this study, we aimed to examine the effect of esmolol and magnesium before extubation on these haemodynamic responses.

Methods: Following the approval of local Ethics Committee, 120 patients having coronary artery bypass grafting with extubation in the intensive care unit were included in the study.

This study was designed to examine the relationship between pericardial fluid and plasma CRP levels, and to alterations in other biochemical parameters in patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG). The study group consisted of 96 Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) patients who were referred to our clinic for a CABG procedure and from whom sufficient amount of pericardial fluid could be collected. The patients were classified into 3 groups: Stable Angina Pectoris (SAP) (n=27), Unstable Angina Pectoris (USAP) (n=36), and Post-Myocardial Infarction (PMI) (n=33).

We compared the effects of sevoflurane, isoflurane and propofol infusions on postoperative recovery criteria in geriatric patients. Sixty patients aged > 65 years, classified as American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) group 1 or 2 and undergoing gynaecological or urological procedures were randomized equally into three groups. Group 1 received 1 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) sevoflurane in a 50% O2/N2O mixture and group 2 received 1 MAC isoflurane in a 50% O2/N2O mixture.

Background: Protamine has adverse effects on pulmonary gas exchange during the postoperative period. The objective of this study was to investigate the importance of aprotinin and pentoxifylline in preventing the leukocyte sequestration and lung injury caused by protamine administered after the termination of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).

Methods: Participants (n = 39) were allocated into three groups at the termination of CPB: Group 1, (control group, n = 16); Group 2 (aprotinin group, n = 12), who received protamine + aprotinin (15,000 IU/kg); and Group 3 (Pentoxifylline group, n = 11), who received protamine + pentoxifylline (10 mg/kg).

This study sought to determine changes in transpulmonary difference in blood cells and alveolar-arterial oxygen (A-aO2) gradient when pulmonary artery circulation was obstructed in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Eighteen patients were divided into group A (control group; X-clamp placed on aorta, n = 9) and group B (pulmonary ischaemia group; X-clamp placed on aorta and pulmonary artery, n = 9). Haematological parameters were compared before CPB and up to 90 min after declamping.

Rho-family GTPases regulate a wide range of biological functions including cell migration, cell adhesion and cell growth. Recently, results from studies in vivo in Drosophila, mouse and humans have demonstrated the involvement of these GTPases in mechanisms controlling neuronal differentiation and the development of the central nervous system (CNS). However, the signalling pathways underlying these functions and the proteins directly regulating RhoGTPases in developing neurons are poorly defined.

The galectin-3 gene (LGALS3) encodes a beta-galactose binding lectin. LGALS3 expression is associated with neoplastic transformation and with differentiation of monocytes to macrophages. Factors involved in migration, proliferation, adhesion and differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC) play a major role during atherosclerosis development.
