Some sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), mainly belonging to the family, have evolved the capability to conserve energy through microbial extracellular electron transfer (EET), suggesting that this process may be more widespread than previously believed. While previous evidence has shown that mobile genetic elements drive the plasticity and evolution of SRB and iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB), few have investigated the shared molecular mechanisms related to EET. To address this, we analyzed the prevalence and abundance of EET elements and how they contributed to their differentiation among 42 members of the family and 23 and 59 members of and , respectively.

Background: Anterior knee pain (AKP) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with patellar preservation is a common complication that significantly affects patients' quality of life. This study aimed to develop a machine-learning model to predict the likelihood of developing AKP after TKA using radiological variables.

Methods: A cohort of 131 anterior stabilized TKA cases (105 patients) without patellar resurfacing was included.

The transplant community is focused on prolonging the preservation time of kidney grafts to allow for long-distance kidney graft transportation, assess the viability of marginal grafts, and optimize a platform for the translation of innovative therapeutics to clinical practice, especially those focused on cell and vector delivery to organ conditioning and reprogramming. We describe the first case of feasible preservation of a kidney from a donor after uncontrolled circulatory death over a 73-h period using normothermic perfusion and analyze hemodynamic, biochemical, histological, and transcriptomic parameters for inflammation and kidney injury. The mean pressure and flow values were 71.

Objective: To determine the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Jeffries questionnaire to assess perception, satisfaction and learning results in Clinical Simulation (QJSC) for students of Health Science degrees.

Method: For the transcultural adaptation to the Spanish language of the QJSC questionnaire, the inverse method was applied with a back translation. Internal consistency analysis was performed to assess reliability, analysed with Cronbach's alpha, a value between 0.

Purpose: To report a successful ab-interno trabeculotomy with Kahook Dual Blade (KDB) in secondary traumatic angle recession glaucoma in a child and discuss the possible mechanisms of action.

Observations: A 7 years-old boy presented, after a blunt trauma in the left eye, with angular recess surroundings 110° and concomitant intra-ocular pressure (IOP) elevation around 35 mmHg, despite the maximum topical and systemic ocular hypotensive therapy. As there was no glaucomatous neuropathy yet, a KDB ab-interno trabeculotomy was performed.

Sulfate reducing prokaryotes (SRP) are a phylogenetically and physiologically diverse group of microorganisms that use sulfate as an electron acceptor. SRP have long been recognized as key players of the carbon and sulfur cycles, and more recently, they have been identified to play a relevant role as part of syntrophic and symbiotic relations and the human microbiome. Despite their environmental relevance, there is a poor understanding about the prevalence of prophages and CRISPR arrays and how their distribution and dynamic affect the ecological role of SRP.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of hospital care volume on the overall survival of children with cancer in Southern Brazil.

Patients And Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 1378 cancer patients aged 0-19 years, diagnosed with cancer between August 1, 2009 and December 31, 2015 in Rio Grande do Sul, who received hospital treatment in institutions affiliated with the Universal Health Care System (Sistema Único de Saúde [SUS]).

Results: Most children and adolescents were male (56.

A new technique for fixating the capsular bag in patients with ectopia lentis is presented. In this technique, the capsulorhexis is performed using a femtosecond laser, followed by the insertion of a standard capsular tension ring to redistribute capsular forces. The nucleus is hydroprolapsed into the anterior chamber and nuclear disassembly is performed above the iris plane to reduce zonular stress.

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) management includes prediction rule evaluation to define standard pretest DVT probabilities in symptomatic patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incremental usefulness of hormonal therapy to the Wells prediction rules for DVT in women. We studied women undertaking compressive ultrasound scanning for suspected DVT.

Introduction: Up to 70% of the world population is lactose intolerance. However, there are no epidemiological studies among Chilean pediatric population affected by this condition.

Objectives: Clinical characterization of a series of children who underwent the lactose intolerance breath test for lactose intolerance study, establishing intolerance and malabsorption frequencies, the most frequent symptoms, and test performance depending on the origin.

Arterial hypertension is a highly prevalent disease and its secondary causes must always be kept in mind because the treatment and prognosis differ between these and essential hypertension. Here we present the first reported case in Argentina of a 21-year-old patient with arterial hypertension and hypokalaemia due to a renin-secreting juxtaglomerular cell tumour, which was diagnosed after seven years of development.

Chromosome abnormalities that usually define high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia are the t(9;22)/ breakpoint cluster region protein-Abelson murine leukemia viral oncogene homolog 1, hypodiploid with < 44 chromosomes and 11q23/ myeloid/lymphoid leukemia gene rearrangements. The spectrum of acute lymphoblastic leukemia genetic abnormalities is nevertheless rapidly expanding. Therefore, newly described chromosomal aberrations are likely to have an impact on clinical care in the near future.

A high-performance liquid chromatographic technique for the simultaneous determination of prednisolone and prednisone in human plasma, whole blood, urine, and bound-to-plasma proteins, using betamethasone as internal standard, is presented. Liquid-liquid extraction is used for whole blood samples, and solid phase extraction is used for plasma, urine, and proteins bound to plasma. The accuracy, precision, specificity, linearity, and repeatability meet the requirements of current recommendations in bioanalytical method validation.

Introduction: The exposure to high altitude (H) produces several physiologic alterations which may induce changes in the pharmacokinetics of drugs. This hypothesis has been confirmed in previous studies which suggest that drugs which are highly bound to plasma proteins are most likely to exhibit altered pharmacokinetics.

Objectives: To further elucidate the influence of H on pharmacokinetics, prednisolone was selected, since it is highly bound to plasma proteins, renally excreted and poorly bound to red blood cells.

Introduction: A cascade of pathophysiological events occurs with the ascension to high altitude (H). We have performed studies on the effects of exposure to H on the pharmacokinetics of drugs. The hypothesis behind these studies has been that the exposure to H, which produces marked physiological changes in the body, may alter pharmacokinetics, and consequently, pharmacodynamics.
