Microplastics (MPs) constitute the predominant plastic type in marine environments. Since they occupy the same size fraction of sediment particles and planktonic organisms they are potentially bioavailable to a broad scope of organisms, such as filter feeders, which are particularly vulnerable to MP ingestion. To understand the potential impact of MPs in filter feeders it is essential to clarify the uptake, accumulation patterns and elimination rates with time of MPs.

The Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals (SHERLOC) instrument onboard the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover detected so far some of the most intense fluorescence signals in association with sulfates analyzing abraded patches of rocks at Jezero crater, Mars. To assess the plausibility of an organic origin of these signals, it is key to understand if organics can survive exposure to ambient Martian UV after exposure by the Perseverance abrasion tool and prior to analysis by SHERLOC. In this work, we investigated the stability of organo-sulfate assemblages under Martian-like UV irradiation and we observed that the spectroscopic features of phthalic and mellitic acid embedded into hydrated magnesium sulfate do not change for UV exposures corresponding to at least 48 Martian sols and, thus, should still be detectable in fluorescence when the SHERLOC analysis takes place, thanks to the photoprotective properties of magnesium sulfate.

Planetary exploration relies considerably on mineral characterization to advance our understanding of the solar system, the planets and their evolution. Thus, we must understand past and present processes that can alter materials exposed on the surface, affecting space mission data. Here, we analyze the first dataset monitoring the evolution of a known mineral target in situ on the Martian surface, brought there as a SuperCam calibration target onboard the Perseverance rover.

This work presents the geochemical characterization of two Martian analogues located in the Basque-Cantabrian Basin: Enekuri and Fruiz. In contrast to previous works carried out on the coastline analogues Meñakoz and Armintza (Biscay, Spain), these new outcrops are not in contact with sea-water nowadays. Hence, the weathering processes observed in Enekuri and Fruiz (inland) are different from those observed in Armintza and Meñakoz (coastline).

In this work, a geological sample of great astrobiological interest was studied through analytical techniques that are currently operating in situ on Mars and others that will operate in the near future. The sample analyzed consisted of an oncoid, which is a type of microbialite, collected in the Salar Carachi Pampa, Argentina. The main peculiarity of microbialites is that they are organo-sedimentary deposits formed by the in situ fixation and precipitation of calcium carbonate due to the growth and metabolic activities of microorganisms.

Diverse criteria or parameters have been cited as tools to determine the maturity of carbonaceous matter (CM) found in geologic samples using Raman spectroscopy. However, these approaches involve the mathematical decomposition of Raman bands which can vary with the specific method, the software employed, or even the individual user. Data should be treated spectrum by spectrum and a similar spectroscopic pre-treatment should be applied to the whole dataset.

Aims: We aimed to study the relation between pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of docetaxel in early breast cancer and recommend a target exposure.

Methods: A PK/PD study was performed in 27 early breast cancer patients treated with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide for 4 cycles followed by 4 cycles of docetaxel 75-100 mg/m infused every 21 days. Individual Bayesian estimates of docetaxel PK parameters were obtained using a nonparametric population PK model developed with data from patients with metastatic breast cancer who received dose-intensified docetaxel (300-350 mg/m ).

Anthracycline-based cancer chemotherapy (ACC) causes myocardial fibrosis, a lesion contributing to left ventricular dysfunction (LVD). We investigated whether the procollagen-derived type-I C-terminal-propeptide (PICP): (1) associates with subclinical LVD (sLVD) at 3-months after ACC (3m-post-ACC); (2) predicts cardiotoxicity 1-year after ACC (12m-post-ACC) in breast cancer patients (BC-patients); and (3) associates with LVD in ACC-induced heart failure patients (ACC-HF-patients). Echocardiography, serum PICP and biomarkers of cardiomyocyte damage were assessed in two independent cohorts of BC-patients: CUN (n = 87) at baseline, post-ACC, and 3m and 12m (n = 65)-post-ACC; and HULAFE (n = 70) at baseline, 3m and 12m-post-ACC.

Calcium sulfates are known to be potential reservoirs of organic compounds and have been detected on Mars. However, not all data that indicate the presence of sulfates collected by the Mars Exploration Rovers (Spirit and Opportunity) and Curiosity rover can be explained by the different calcium sulfate polymorphs, and therefore, mixtures of calcium sulfates with other single sulfates must be considered. In addition, the presence of mixed calcium sulfates supports the data and indicates that the molar ratio of sulfate/calcium is >1.

This work proposes an innovative non-destructive analytical strategy, based on Confocal Raman micro-spectroscopy, High Resolution Raman Imaging and micro-X-Ray Fluorescence imaging, as part of the quick non-destructive techniques that could be used to characterize the Martian samples from the Mars Sample Return mission when back on Earth. Until that moment, Martian Meteorites are the only Martian samples in our hands to develop such Analytical Strategies. To demonstrate its capabilities, this analytical strategy has been applied to characterize the Dar al Gani 735 Martian Meteorite with the aim to identify the terrestrial and non-terrestrial alterations suffered by the meteorite as a very valuable complementary methodology to the more traditional petrographic analyses and single point measurements.
