With the CV technique, reversible voltammetric waves of around +0.470 V and irreversible voltammetric waves of around +1.

Investigating the Role of Oxidative Stress in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo with Spot Urine.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the role of oxidative stress in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) by measuring urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), 8-hydroxy-guanosine (8-OHG), and 8-hydroxy-guanine levels.

Methods: Thirty-one adult female patients diagnosed with BPPV were included in this study. Patients with central pathologies and other peripheral causes of vertigo were excluded from the study.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the primary cause of mortality due to cancer in females around the world. Fetuin-A is known to increase metastases over signals and peroxisomes related with growing. Subjects And Methods: Forty-two eyes with PPV and the same patients' fellow 42 eyes (without PPV) included this study.

Relationship between circulating microparticles and hypertension and other cardiac disease biomarkers in the elderly.

Background: Microparticles are procoagulant membrane vesicles that play role in endothelium dysfunction pathogenesis and are increased in hypertension, acute/chronic vascular pathological events. Here; we aimed to compare MPs levels of hypertensive geriatric patients with healthy age-match-patients, discuss its availability as a cardiovascular biomarker and investigate its relationship with other inflammatory markers.

Methods: Forty seven hypertensive geriatric patients (M/F;15/32) and 47 healthy controls (M/F;19/28) were included in the study.

Synthesis, characterization, and application of a novel multifunctional stationary phase for hydrophilic interaction/reversed phase mixed-mode chromatography.

A novel multifunctional stationary phase based on silica gel was synthesised starting from L- isoleucine and 4-phenylbutylamine and evaluated as a hydrophilic interaction/reversed-phase mixed-mode stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The prepared stationary phase was characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) and solid-state C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The mechanisms involved in the chromatographic separation are multi-interaction, including hydrophobic, π-π, hydrogen-bonding, dipole-dipole and ion-dipole interactions.

Serum Osteoprotegerin Levels Related With Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Background: To evaluate osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels in relation to cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on different regimens of renal replacement therapy.

Methods: A total of 143 patients with CKD and 30 healthy controls were included in this study and divided into five categories, including predialysis patients with chronic renal failure (preD; n = 36), chronic peritoneal dialysis patients (PD; n = 36), hemodialysis patients (HD; n = 35), renal transplant patients (RT; n = 36), and controls (n = 30). Data on demographics, concomitant diseases and CV risk factors, serum OPG levels, and correlates of serum OPG levels were determined.

The aim of this study was to develop an alternative model in order to apply the AON quality control procedure to datasets that include qualitative values below limit of detection (LoD). The reported patient test results for tumor markers, such as CA 15-3, CA 125, and CA 19-9, analyzed by two instruments, were retrieved from the information system over a period of 5 months, using the calibrator and control materials with the same lot numbers.

Vitamin D levels in children with familial Mediterranean fever.

Background: This study aimed to determine whether vitamin D deficiency is more common in children with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) than in healthy individuals.

Methods: The study group consisted of 100 patients diagnosed with FMF and 50 healthy children. Serum baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and other related parameters were evaluated.

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the availability of osteoprotegerin (OPG) as a marker of atherosclerosis and compare serum OPG levels with ankle-brachial index (ABI) in diabetic patients.

Materials And Methods: A total of 31 type 1 and 31 type 2 diabetic patients without macrovascular complications and 20 healthy volunteers were included. Serum OPG levels and ABI were measured.

Preparation of a novel ionic hybrid stationary phase by non-covalent functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes with amino-derivatized silica gel for fast HPLC separation of aromatic compounds.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were immobilized on spherical silica gel with a 4-μm average particle size and a 60-Å average pore size. The amino-derivatized silica gel was non-covalently coated with carboxylated SWCNTs to preserve the structure of the nanotubes and their physico-chemical properties. The novel ionic hybrid stationary phase was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infra-red (IR) spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and then, it was used to fill an empty 150×4.

The new stationary phase bears an embedded amide group into phenyl ring, highly polar a terminal amide group and non-polar groups (phenyl and alkyl groups).

Recovery of water and acid from leach solutions using direct contact membrane distillation.

This paper describes for the first time the use of direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) for acid and water recovery from a real leach solution generated by a hydrometallurgical plant. The leach solutions considered contained H2SO4 or HCl. In all tests the temperature of the feed solution was kept at 60 °C.

Development of a novel amide-silica stationary phase for the reversed-phase HPLC separation of different classes of phytohormones.

A novel amide-bonded silica stationary phase was prepared starting from N-Boc-phenylalanine, cyclohexylamine and spherical silica gel (4 µm, 60 Å). The amide ligand was synthesised with high yield. The resulting amide bonded stationary phase was characterised by SEM, IR and elemental analysis.

Objective. Anticyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCP) testing is useful in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with high specificity. Arthritis is a very common clinical manifestation in children with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF).

Background/aims: Screening for precancerous lesions is important for the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal tumors. We investigated M2-pyruvate kinase levels in patients with colorectal polyps and carcinoma and assessed factors affecting M2-pyruvate kinase levels.

Materials And Methods: Eighty-five patients who had undergone colonoscopic examination and who were diagnosed with a neoplastic lesion were included.

Numerical prediction of the performance of horizontal sand filters as the pitch of the spiral protrusion changes.

The height of vertical sand filters are limited due to their structural cost. A horizontal sand filter may offer a better alternative; however, flow channels to the least resistance zone generated at the top of the filter as the sand gets wet and settles. A horizontal sand filter, internally baffled with spiral protrusion, is numerically modelled to study the effect of these spirals in reducing the channelling and enhancing the filter's effectiveness.

[Lagophthalmos and ectropion of the upper eyelids in congenital ichthyosis].

This report concerns the case of a 10-year-old female patient with congenital ichthyosis who developed bilateral ectropion of the upper eyelids resulting in massive ocular surface alterations due to lagophthalmos. A complex surgical approach with partial excision, tarsal strip refixation and a free skin graft led to normalization of the eyelid positioning and healing of the ocular surface.

[Treatment of trichiasis and distichiasis with a biopsy punch -- an effective and practical method for eyelash follicle excision].

Localised distichiasis and trichiasis with resulting keratopathy leads to considerable impairment for the patient. We present a new technique which enables the surgeon to excise the lash with its follicle to prevent regrowth in a single movement. The procedure does not need any preparation, leaving the lid with minimal concomitant trauma which prevents recurrence of trichiasis.

Association of serum fetuin-A levels with heart valve calcification and other biomarkers of inflammation among persons with acute coronary syndrome.

Purpose: Fetuin-A is a multifunctional hepatic secretory protein that inhibits dystrophic vascular and valvular calcification. Our aim was to evaluate the relationship among fetuin-A levels, heart valve calcification and other biomarkers of inflammation in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Methods: The associations among serum fetuin-A concentrations, mitral annular (MAC) and aortic valve calcification and other biomarkers of inflammation (hs-CRP, ferritin, fibrinogen, white blood cell count (WBC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), albumin levels) were evaluated in ACS patients and healthy controls.
