Article Synopsis
  • Agriculture faces increasing food demands due to global population growth, while various biotic and abiotic stresses, especially drought, significantly hinder productivity.
  • Drought stress leads to harmful changes in plants, causing stunted growth, reduced photosynthesis, and other negative effects, necessitating the development of effective mitigation strategies.
  • Using plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) offers a promising alternative to improve drought tolerance and plant health through enhanced root structure, better water retention, and activation of stress defense mechanisms, but commercial use will rely on selecting effective strains.

The present study evaluated the priming efficacy of chitosan and chitosan-derived nanoparticles (CNPs) against bacterial wilt of tomato. In the current study, seed-treated CNPs plus pathogen-inoculated tomato seedlings recorded significant protection of 62 % against pathogen-induced wilt disease and subsequently better growth. The induced resistance was witnessed by a prominent increase in lignin, callose and HO deposition, followed by superoxide radical accumulation in leaves.

Soil salinity stress has become a serious roadblock for food production worldwide since it is one of the key factors affecting agricultural productivity. Salinity and drought are predicted to cause considerable loss of crops. To deal with this difficult situation, a variety of strategies have been developed, including plant breeding, plant genetic engineering, and a wide range of agricultural practices, including the use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and seed biopriming techniques, to improve the plants' defenses against salinity stress, resulting in higher crop yields to meet future human food demand.

Article Synopsis
  • The study developed a method using endophytic fungal extracts to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and assessed their antimicrobial and anticancer potential.
  • Various characterization techniques confirmed that the synthesized ZnO NPs were pure, mostly hexagonal, and ranged from 34-55 nm in size, demonstrating effective antibacterial and antifungal properties.
  • The ZnO NPs showed significant internalization in cancer cells without damaging cell morphology, exhibiting notable anticancer effects at a concentration of 1 μg/mL.

Endophytic fungi from orchid plants are reported to secrete secondary metabolites which include bioactive antimicrobial siderophores. In this study endophytic fungi capable of secreting siderophores were isolated from , a medicinal orchid plant. The isolated extracellular siderophores from orchidaceous fungi act as chelating agents forming soluble complexes with Fe.

In recent years, exploration of biopolymer-based materials to avoid hazardous chemicals in agriculture has gained enormous importance for sustainable crop improvement. In the present study, chitosan a biopolymer derived from crab-shell was used in different concentrations as priming agent to cucumber seeds and were evaluated for its effect to enhance plant growth parameters as well as its ability to induce resistance against powdery mildew disease. Among the treatments, seeds-primed with 2.

belonging to the Myrtaceae family was explored for the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles and for biological applications. The aqueous extract of the synthesized zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs) was characterized using UV-visible spectrophotometer, FTIR, SEM and TEM. The aqueous broth was observed to be an efficient reducing agent, leading to the rapid formation of ZnNPs of varied shapes with sizes ranging between 52-70 nm.
