With the western influence in our diets, food consumption has changed, and our magnesium (Mg) intake is no longer optimal. Serum Mg (S-Mg) level is currently used as an indicator of Mg deficiency and is strictly regulated via compensatory mechanisms. It is believed that a 24-h urine collection can be used to evaluate potential Mg deficiency.

Background: Earlier differential diagnosis of dementia remains a major challenge. Although amyloid deposition by positron emission tomography is an emerging standard for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, it is too expensive for routine use in clinical settings. We conducted a pilot study on the potential usefulness of single-photon emission computed tomography and the Mini-Mental State Examination to predict amyloid positron emission tomography positivity in preclinical Alzheimer's disease.

The incidence of hypertension increases with age, as does that of brain abnormalities associated with cerebral pathologic and functional degeneration. Little is known about the relationship between hypertension-related cardiac changes and cerebral pathologic degeneration. We examined the relationship between left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction and cerebral white matter hyperintensity (WMH) progression in young-old hypertensive patients.

Background: Antiangiogenic drug (AAD)-triggered oxygen and nutrient depletion through suppression of angiogenesis switches glucose-dependent to lipid-dependent metabolism. Blocking fatty acid oxidation can enhance AAD-mediated anti-tumor effects in colorectal cancer (CRC). Therefore, we hypothesised that genetic variants in the lipid metabolism pathway may predict clinical outcomes [overall response rate (ORR), overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS)] in metastatic CRC (mCRC) patients receiving bevacizumab-based first-line treatment.

Fructose is associated with hyperuricemia and gout development. Focusing on fructose and fructose-containing disaccharides, we investigated the effects of three different types of carbohydrates (fructose, sucrose, and isomaltulose) on uric acid metabolism and gene expression profiling in peripheral white blood cells. In a randomized crossover study, ten healthy participants ingested test drinks of fructose, sucrose, and isomaltulose, each containing 25 g of fructose.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether the angle of tines on the Micra leadless pacemaker affects their engagement with the heart muscle during implantation.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 93 patients and found that tines with angles less than 10 degrees were always engaged, while higher angles made engagement unpredictable.
  • The findings suggest that measuring the angle of the tines before testing can help predict whether they are securely anchored to the myocardium.

Phosphoinositide species, differing in phosphorylation at hydroxyls of the inositol head group, play roles in various cellular events. Despite the importance of phosphoinositides, simultaneous quantification of individual phosphoinositide species is difficult using conventional methods. Here we developed a supercritical fluid chromatography-mass spectrometry method that can quantify the molecular species of all seven phosphoinositide regioisomers.

Background: Genomic signatures contributing to high tumour mutational burden (TMB-H) independent from mismatch-repair deficiency (dMMR) or microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) status are not well studied. We aimed to characterise molecular features of microsatellite stable (MSS) TMB-H gastrointestinal tumours.

Methods: Molecular alterations of 48 606 gastrointestinal tumours from Caris Life Sciences (CARIS) identified with next-generation sequencing were compared among MSS-TMB-H, dMMR/MSI-H, and MSS-TMB-low (L) tumours, using χ or Fisher's exact tests.
