Article Synopsis
  • Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) are both toxic gases associated with fire atmospheres, with a focus on the underrecognized role of HCN in fatalities.
  • The 1990 fire incident at a prison in Argentina resulted in 35 deaths, prompting an investigation into the toxicological levels of COHb and HCN in the victims' blood.
  • Findings revealed that HCN concentrations exceeded lethal levels, and statistical analysis indicated a relationship between COHb and HCN, suggesting HCN was likely the primary cause of death due to its release from burning polyurethane materials.
