Development and results of the epilepsy surgery in Armenia: hope for a better future.

Purpose: We present our experience with the national epilepsy surgery program in Armenia by tracing the development of epilepsy surgery in the largest pediatric neurology department at "Arabkir" Medical Center. This development was possible on the basis of a strong collaboration with the Epilepsy Surgery center at the University Hospital "Sofia St. Ivan Rilski," Sofia, Bulgaria.

Kidney Transplantation in Low- to Middle-Income Countries: Outcomes and Lessons Learned from Armenia.

BACKGROUND Treatment of end-stage renal disease constitutes a heavy financial burden, especially in developing countries. Maintaining a kidney transplantation program is an extremely complex task in countries with limited resources. It often requires expertise and support from developed countries.

Introducing multi-modal enteral medication reduced morbidity and mortality associated with necrotising enterocolitis.

Aim: Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) is still a disease with high morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study was to analyse retrospectively whether the introduction of a multi-modal three-component enteral medication regimen resulted in a change in morbidity and mortality in neonates with NEC.

Methods: When diagnosis of NEC was established, the following multi-modal three-component enteral medication regimen was administered enterally (via nasogastric tube): an antibiotic, an antifungal agent and a probiotic.

Respiratory syncytial and influenza virus detecting rapid tests in children younger than 5 years of age in Armenia.

Introduction: Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are major causes of morbidity in early childhood. They are mainly caused by viruses, including influenza (INF) and respiratory syncytial viruses (RSV). We aimed to investigate the role of RSV and INF in children hospitalized for ARIs and to show the impact of RSV/INF rapid testing on management of patients.

Child and Adolescent Health in Armenia: Experiences and Learned Lessons.

The health of children and adolescents of Armenia has been affected by various socioeconomic, environmental, educational, and behavioral factors, demonstrating trends typical for both developed and developing countries. Key issues to be addressed by Armenian pediatricians are child mortality, malnutrition, and growth failure in the early years and overweight in later years. The case of Armenia illustrates how countries in transition are currently tackling both "old" problems (mortality and malnutrition) and "new" emerging morbidities (chronic diseases and adolescent health problems) based on social and health determinants, but the financing of the health system is far from satisfactory.

Native kidney biopsies in Armenian and Swiss children: high prevalence of amyloidosis in Yerevan and of IgA nephropathy in Zurich.

The spectrum of pathology in native kidney biopsies varies considerably between different countries. Based on similar biopsy policy and joint workup, biopsy data of native kidneys of children in Yerevan (Armenia) and Zurich (Switzerland) were compared over a period of two decades (1993-2002 and 2003-2012).
