Article Synopsis
  • Increased cardiovascular mortality in acromegaly is primarily caused by cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death, with acromegalic cardiomyopathy being a key contributor.
  • Risk factors for developing cardiomyopathy include age, duration of acromegaly, and body mass index (BMI), while the length of growth hormone excess matters more than its level.
  • Improved treatment options for acromegaly have helped reduce morbidity and mortality, but neoplastic causes are currently the leading cause of death in affected patients.

Pheochromocytomas are tumors that originate from the chromaffin tissue of the adrenal medulla and commonly produce catecholamines. The diagnosis is typically established by the measurement of catecholamines or their metabolites in urine or plasma, and tumors are localized with the use of radiographic and scintigraphic studies. Pheochromocytomas can occur in asymptomatic patients, and the preferred treatment is surgical removal of the tumor.
