The evolutionary conserved Notch signaling pathway functions as a mediator of direct cell-cell communication between neighboring cells during development. Notch plays a crucial role in various fundamental biological processes in a wide range of tissues. Accordingly, the aberrant signaling of this pathway underlies multiple genetic pathologies such as developmental syndromes, congenital disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer.

  • New HIV-1 infections among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Athens increased significantly in 2011, with ongoing transmission remaining even after a decline post-2013.
  • The study estimated the time from infection to diagnosis for 844 PWID and found a median time of 0.42 years during the outbreak and 0.70 years from 2016-2019.
  • The analysis revealed that 93.5% of infections during 2016-2019 were clustered, indicating a persistent HIV outbreak among PWID and highlighting the need for focused interventions.

The first prospective surveillance of ESBL and colistin-resistant recovered from sick pigs from a slaughterhouse in Central Greece aimed to investigate the spread of relevant genetic elements. In February 2021, 25 isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing using disk diffusion and broth microdilution techniques. PCR screening was conducted to identify ESBLs and genes.

Special populations, particularly pregnant women, are uniquely susceptible to infectious diseases due to alterations in their immunological, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems during gestation. Influenza infections during the perinatal period have been associated with more severe maternal and perinatal outcomes, underscoring the critical importance of vaccination data for pregnant women. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), all pregnant women and those of childbearing age should receive the inactivated influenza vaccine, irrespective of their pregnancy stage.

Introduction: Viruses are detected in over 50% of acute asthma attacks and in a notable proportion of patients with asthma during stable disease state They are associated with worse outcomes. We will conduct a series of systematic reviews and meta-analyses to quantify the prevalence and clinical burden of various respiratory viruses in stable asthma and acute asthma attacks. In addition, we will assess the viral loads of respiratory viruses during stable and acute asthma, to explore whether viral load could differentiate attacks triggered by viruses versus those where viruses are present as "innocent bystanders".

People living with HIV (PLWH) constitute a vulnerable population for acquiring additional sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study was conducted to provide a summary of the evidence on the global prevalence of STIs in PLWH with an emphasis on infectious agents, diagnostic methods, and related risk factors. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched to include records published from January 01, 1990, to January 31, 2022, and the Google Scholar search engine was used to check the search strategy.

  • Persistent high-risk HPV infection is crucial to the development of cervical cancer and increasingly linked to head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), with HPV-positive cases having distinct characteristics compared to HPV-negative ones.
  • This study investigates the epigenetic changes in the HPV16 gene and untranslated region (UTR) using pyrosequencing in HPV16-positive HNSCC biopsies, focusing on DNA methylation patterns.
  • Results show significant methylation at specific sites associated with tumor histological grade, while HPV16 DNA physical status did not relate to methylation or tumor features, highlighting complex interactions between the virus and host in HNSCC patients in Greece.

Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder with multiple genetic and environmental factors contributing to its pathogenesis. Viral infections have been suggested to be one of the environmental factors associated with the development of this disorder. We comprehensively review all relevant published literature focusing on the relationship between schizophrenia and various viral infections, such as influenza virus, herpes virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), retrovirus, coronavirus, and Borna virus.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) are present in wastewaters as their elimination during treatment in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is often impossible. Water plays an important role in the spread of these microorganisms among humans, animals and the environment. This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial resistance patterns, resistance genes and molecular genotypes by means of phylogenetic groups of isolates in aquatic habitats, including sewage and receiving water bodies, as well as clinical settings in the Boeotia regional district of Greece.

Prostate cancer is the second most diagnosed form of cancer in men worldwide and accounted for roughly 1.3 million cases and 359,000 deaths globally in 2018, despite all the available treatment strategies including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Finding novel approaches to prevent and treat prostate and other urogenital cancers effectively is of major importance.

Immunizations during pregnancy are an important aspect of perinatal care. Although the influenza vaccine during pregnancy is safe, vaccination rates are low. According to research data, one of the reasons for the low vaccination rates among pregnant women is that they do not receive a clear recommendation from healthcare providers.

Cervical cancer affects many women worldwide, with more than 500,000 cases diagnosed and approximately 300,000 deaths each year. Resveratrol is a natural substance of the class of phytoalexins with a basic structure of stilbenes and has recently drawn scientific attention due to its anticancer properties. The purpose of this review is to examine the effectiveness of resveratrol against cervical cancer.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein is a multifunctional protein that is involved in the proliferation, inflammation, and apoptosis mechanism of hepatocytes. HCV core protein genetic variability has been implicated in various outcomes of HCV pathology and treatment. In the present study, we aimed to analyze the role of the HCV core protein in tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα)-induced death under the viewpoint of HCV genetic variability.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that has emerged as a major cause of viral encephalitis and meningitis, rarely leading to death. Several risk factors have been discussed in the past concerning the severity of the disease, while few reports have focused on precipitating conditions that determine of WNV-related death. Studies on cohorts of patients suffering of West Nile disease (WND) usually encompass low numbers of deceased patients as a result of the rarity of the event.

Recent trends have shown a dramatic rise in the incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma strongly associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) of type 16. The genetic variability of HPV16 has been extensively studied in cervical cancer but there are very limited published data concerning the genetic variations of this HPV type in oropharyngeal cancer. In the present study, the genetic variations of HPV16 gene sequences originated from a small cohort of Greek patients diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer were assessed.

Background And Aims: To provide a fair estimate of the prevalence of factor V Leiden (FVL) (G1691A), prothrombin (G20210A), and MTHFR (C677T) mutations in the Greek population.

Methods: We genotyped a representative sample of 974 apparently healthy Greek adults by the method of real-time PCR and we calculated the allele frequencies of factor V Leiden (FVL) (G1691A), prothrombin (G20210A), and MTHFR (C677T) mutations. In addition, we determined the frequency of co-occurrence of FVL (1691A) and prothrombin (20210A), FVL (1691A) and MTHFR (677T), prothrombin (20210A) and MTHFR (677T) mutations.

  • The HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Athens between 2011-13 was Europe and North America's largest recent epidemic, prompting a study on prevalence, drug use, and prevention access from 2014-20.
  • Two community-based programs collected data from PWID using respondent-driven sampling, revealing an increase in HIV prevalence from 14.2% to 22.0% between the two periods, and highlighting worsening socio-economic conditions and decreased access to prevention.
  • The estimated HIV incidence was 1.94 new cases per 100 person-years during 2014-20, with younger age and lower education identified as associated risk factors.
