Small ruminant lentiviruses are a group of viruses infecting goat and sheep worldwide. These viruses exhibit an extraordinary degree of genetic and antigenic variability that severely influence in vivo and in vitro features, as well as diagnostic test results. Small ruminant farming is the most important animal farming business in Greece, with a high impact on the Greek primary economy.

Lung function at three months after hospitalization due to COVID‑19 pneumonia: Comparison of alpha, delta and omicron variant predominance periods.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has already affected millions of individuals, with increasing numbers of survivors. These data suggest that the pulmonary sequelae of the infection may have an effect on a wide range of individuals. The aim of the present study was to evaluate pulmonary function in patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 three months after hospital discharge.

The Risk of Injury in Wrist Arthroscopy Portals: A Cadaveric Study.

During wrist arthroscopy, the wrist joint can be visualized from almost every perspective through a combination of standard dorsal and volar arthroscopic portals. This cadaveric study aims to compare all wrist portals described in terms of their safety in order to rank them according to the distance from the nearest structure at risk for arthroscopic wrist procedures. Twenty-nine cadaveric formalin-embellished upper limbs were examined.

Bone Marrow Iron Stores Are Not Associated with Increased Risk for Invasive Fungal Infections in Patients with Newly Diagnosed Acute Leukemia or Myelodysplastic Syndrome in Transformation: Is There a Relationship?

Iron plays an important role in the pathogenesis of infections, including invasive fungal infections (IFIs). Studies suggested that iron overload might represent an additional risk factor for IFIs among patients with hematological malignancies. We conducted a prospective, multi-center study amongst adult patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in transformation to determine whether baseline iron overload as measured using the bone marrow iron store (BMIS) score is an independent risk factor for the development of IFIs.

A Cadaveric Case of an Accessory Cleido-Occipital Muscle Over the Common Trunk of the Supraclavicular Nerves.

The current study describes a case of an aberrant cleido-occipital muscle. In particular, this muscle was arising from the middle part of the clavicle, inserted into the medial part of the upper trapezius muscle, and crossed over the supraclavicular nerves with possible compression of them, especially during shoulder abduction. Knowledge of the muscular variability of the posterior cervical triangle is crucial for supraclavicular nerve entrapment syndrome diagnosis and treatment.

External Jugular Vein Perforation by the Transverse Cutaneous Nerve of The Neck: A Case Report and Review of The Literature.

A very rare anatomical variation of external jugular vein's penetration by the transverse cutaneous nerve of the neck is displayed in the current study. The phenomenon of veins' fenestration or penetration by other structures, such as nerves along with its likely embryologic development are discussed. Moreover, the potential clinical significance of that variation's awareness on behalf the physician is discussed in detail.

Circulation of Pestiviruses in Small Ruminants from Greece: First Molecular Identification of Border Disease Virus.

The incidence of small ruminant pestivirus infections in Greece remains unknown as they have not been diagnosed in the country since 1974 when the most recent Border Disease Virus (BDV) outbreak was reported. The objective of our study was to explore the possible occurrence of pestiviral infections among sheep and goat farms in Greece and to further determine the variants of major concern. Thus, serum samples were collected from 470 randomly selected animals belonging to 28 different flocks/herds.

Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLVs) are highly diverse retroviruses infecting sheep and goats. Although PCR-based testing is being utilized for diagnostics, its application is hampered by various factors. These include, among others, the exceptionally high genetic variability of SRLVs, as well as the low number of infected blood monocytes.

Hospital-wide antifungal prescription in Greek hospitals: a multicenter repeated point-prevalence study.

The aim of the study was to evaluate antifungal prescriptions among hospitalized adult patients in Greek hospitals. This multicenter two-times, 1-day, point-prevalence study was carried out in 2015 and 2017 in five and six hospitals, respectively. Among the 5812 patients screened in both periods, antifungals were prescribed in 129 patients (73 in 2015 and 56 in 2017); antifungals were used as prophylaxis in 31 patients (24%), pre-emptively in 32 (25%), empirically in 38 (30%), and as targeted therapy in 28 (22%).

Development of real-time PCR-based methods for the detection of enzootic nasal tumor virus 2 in goats.

Enzootic nasal adenocarcinoma (ENA) is a contagious neoplasm of sheep and goats, associated with the oncogenic retroviruses enzootic nasal tumor virus (ENTV) 1 and 2, respectively. It appears to be common in countries with substantial small ruminant-production. ENA diagnosis in goats is based on autopsy and histopathology, and there is no real-time PCR method available for ENTV-2 detection.

Spontaneous rupture of renal pelvis as a rare complication of ureteral lithiasis.

Spontaneous rupture of renal pelvis with urine extravasation is a rare condition and usually associated with obstructing ureteric calculus. It poses diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas, while a stepwise approach for the confirmation of diagnosis, treatment and follow up is needed. We present a case of a 75-year old male patient who had a renal pelvis rupture with perirenal extravasation of urine due to a 4 mm stone located at the right ureterovesical junction.

The aim of this study was to use volatile anesthetics sevoflurane and isoflurane in children for sedation in the intensive care unit.
