Numerical Simulation of Compressive Testing of Sandwich Structures with Novel Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Cores.

Sandwich structures with triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) cores have garnered research attention due to their potential to address challenges in lightweight solutions, high-strength designs, and energy absorption capabilities. This study focuses on performing finite element analyses (FEAs) on eight novel TPMS cores and one stochastic topology. It presents a method of analysis obtained through implicit modeling in simulations and examines whether the results obtained differ from a conventional method that uses a non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) approach.

Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMSs) constitute a type of metamaterial, deriving their unique characteristics from their microstructure topology. They exhibit wide parameterization possibilities, but their behavior is hard to predict. This study focuses on using an implicit modeling method that can effectively generate novel thin-walled metamaterials, proposing eight shell-based TPMS topologies and one stochastic structure, along with the gyroid acting as a reference.

Telomere Length, HLA, and Longevity-Results from a Multicenter Study.

Aging is an exceptionally complex process that depends on genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Previous studies within the International HLA and Immunogenetics Workshop (IHIWS) component "Immunogenetics of Ageing" showed that longevity is associated with positive selection of HLA-DRB1*11- and DRB1*16-associated haplotypes, shown to be protective against diseases. Within the 18th IHIWS, we aimed to investigate the relevance of telomere length for successful aging and its association with classical HLAs.

A Digital Tool Supporting Pathology Practice and Identifying Leucocytes.

The aim of this work is to deliver an all-in-one package that contains both the part where the pathologist can manipulate the data as well as predefined models, altogether with the digital pathology interface with a comprehensive component that provides traceability between the identified leucocytes and the underlying possible outcomes of the potential disease. The aim is to directly provide the number of leucocytes and the mass of the cell, only from the image, with minimal intervention from the pathologist, necessary to have a PoC (Proof of Concept) or a prototype. The model was trained on a dataset of around 20,000 models, and the achieved accuracy was approximately 85%.

Time for micro-RNAs in steatotic liver disease: a case-control study.

One of the challenges of modern-day living is to resist the temptation of overfeeding and sedentariness and maintain a healthy body and mind. On a favorable genetic and epigenetic background, a high-fat diet combined with lack of physical exercise constitutes the foundation for severe metabolic disturbances including steatotic liver disease. In our case-control study, we had the aim of establishing the role of selected micro-RNAs-miR-122, miR-192, miR-33a, and miR-33b-as superior biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of steatotic liver in a 36-patient cohort compared to 12 healthy controls.

The Connection between MiR-122 and Lymphocytes in Patients Receiving Treatment for Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection.

New molecular predictors for the response to treatment in HBV (hepatitis B virus) infection are assessed. Among them is miR-122. Our article searches the connection between miR-122 and the counts of lymphocytes in chronic HBV patients receiving treatment.

A MicroRNA-Based Method for High-Viremia Detection-A New Approach on a Romanian Lot of Chronically Infected Patients with Hepatitis B Virus.

The HBV (hepatitis B virus) infection is intended for elimination, but evaluating patients is both costly and insufficiently applied in several countries. An expensive analysis in Romania is HBV-DNA quantification, with a limited prognostic potential. Our study intended to find new predictors for high viremia in HBV patients, using molecules involved in the multiple assessment of various HBV complications, such as microRNAs.

Use of Personalized Biomarkers in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer and the Impact of AI.

Colorectal cancer is a major cause of cancer-related death worldwide and is correlated with genetic and epigenetic alterations in the colonic epithelium. Genetic changes play a major role in the pathophysiology of colorectal cancer through the development of gene mutations, but recent research has shown an important role for epigenetic alterations. In this review, we try to describe the current knowledge about epigenetic alterations, including DNA methylation and histone modifications, as well as the role of non-coding RNAs as epigenetic regulators and the prognostic and predictive biomarkers in metastatic colorectal disease that can allow increases in the effectiveness of treatments.

Primary solitary fibrous tumor of the thyroid gland: A review starting from a case report.

Primary solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the thyroid gland is a rare mesenchymal tumor with fibroblastic differentiation, ramified, thin-walled, enlarged (staghorn) vessels and specific NAB2-STAT6 gene fusion, which is more commonly found in pleura and peritoneum. This neoplasm can be located in a variety of anatomical sites outside pleura and peritoneum including bone, visceral organs and soft tissues, head and neck examples representing only 10-15% of the extra-pleural and extra-peritoneal tumors. Diagnosing this entity can be difficult, especially in thyroid gland, mainly because of the rarity of this neoplasm, but presence of characteristic microscopic features together with positivity for STAT6 and CD34 can confirm the diagnosis and exclude other differential diagnosis.

Prenatally Diagnosed Infantile Myofibroma of Sartorius Muscle-A Differential for Soft Tissue Masses in Early Infancy.

Background: Infantile myofibromatosis (IM) is a soft tissue disease with solitary or multiple benign tumors, and an etiology still unknown. IM is a mesenchymal disorder of early infancy and is more frequent in males. IM may present as a solitary lesion of the skin, bone, muscle, subcutaneous tissue, located at the head, neck, and trunk, with good prognosis; or, as a multicentric form, with or without visceral involvement (heart, lung, gastrointestinal tract, kidney), with a poor prognosis.

Morphology and one immunohistochemical marker are enough for diagnosis of primary thyroid angiosarcoma.

Primary thyroid angiosarcoma is a very rare and extremely aggressive mesenchymal malignant neoplasm showing morphological and immunophenotypic evidence of endothelial cell differentiation. Early diagnosis of this tumor along with radical thyroidectomy followed by postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy are essential for adequate management of the patient. Currently available data on diagnosis and treatment options of this neoplasm are limited because it is a rare disease in endocrine organs.

The rarity of nongravid uterus torsion - difficult diagnosis even in modern medicine.

Uterine torsion is a rare surgical emergency that can evolve with ischemic lesions of the genital organs. We present a case of a 59 year-old woman who was hospitalized with important abdominal pain and modified general status. On clinical examination, a giant abdominal mass was found, and bimanual genital palpation could not find the cervix but revealed tension in the vaginal walls.

Cephalic undifferentiated carcinoma with osteoclast-like giant cells arising from the main pancreatic duct: case report and literature review.

Undifferentiated carcinoma with osteoclast-like giant cell (UCOGC) is a ductal carcinoma variant with a recently reported more protracted survival and pathognomonic histology comprising two cell populations: the mononuclear tumoral cells and nontumoral multinucleated giant cells. It usually presents as a large heterogenic tumor with mixed solid-cystic components. The tumor develops from the ductal epithelium but the sequence of epithelial changes is often not identified due to the rapid tumoral growth and associated necrotic changes.

Abelès method revisited.

The Abelès method is a classical method for determining the refractive index of dielectric thin films. In this paper we examine the main features of the method in a formal manner, using closed-form equations, and we show that the method is ambiguous in certain yet unreported situations.

[The results of the Sommerville-Petit procedure in the treatment of the typical congenital hip dislocation].

The studied group from the Pediatric Surgery and Orthopedics Clinic, Iaşi, consisted of 87 cases, which means that a total of 118 hips were treated between September 1998-September 2004. In 116 cases, the extension was performed with trans-femoral Kirschner wire, in a period of 3-7 weeks. After 7-14 days of extension, the authors performed adductor and sometimes psoas tenotomy.

[Hemangioendothelioma in children].

The hemangioendothelium is a vascular tumor rarely seen in the pediatric practice. This case underlines the difficulty that lies in establishing a differential diagnosis with a localized adenopathy when this vascular tumor is developing inside a ganglionic region. The surgical treatment followed by interferon therapy determined a favorable evolution in this case because the hemangioendothelium is a vascular borderline tumor.

[Primary obstructive megaureter- diagnosis and treatment].

The authors have treated 13 cases of primary obstructive megaureter (POM) in children, presenting without vesicoureteric reflux. The diagnostic possibilities and the surgical approach options are discussed. Both Cohen and Leadbetter--Politano uretero-vesical reimplantation techniques proved to be successful in this series.

[Achalasia in children: Diagnostic opportunities and therapeutical options].

Achalasia is a functional disorder of the distal esophagus, which fails to relax during swallowing. Although being rare, this disorder is the source of a significant morbidity, including developmental disorders in children. Several therapeutical options are available: myorelaxants administration, esophageal dilations and surgery--distal esophageal myomectomy followed by an antireflux procedure.

Tilt-compensating algorithm for phase-shift interferometry.

A self-calibrating algorithm for phase-shift interferometry is described that is able to cancel the effect of accidental relative tilts that may occur during phase stepping. The algorithm is able to retrieve both the phase steps and the tilts that accompany them. Only three phase-shifted interferograms are needed, and no other information about the intentional phase shifts or possible tilts has to be supplied.

[Evaluation of the benefits brought by pregnancy planning in type 1 diabetes mellitus].

Fetal mortality and morbidity remain dramatically increased in diabetic women. To evaluate the benefit of a preconceptional education combined with a good metabolic control, we compared the outcome of pregnancy in 2 groups of type I diabetic women: group A (n = 21) planned before conception versus group B (n = 40) not planned. Both groups were similar related to the type and duration of diabetes, its complications, age, body mass index and different factors of risk.

Ambiguities in determining the optical constants for two reflection methods.

The Darcie-Whalen reflection method is ambiguous and has a chart area of 72%, which is less sensitive than method H-Owen's classification-which is unambiguous and has a chart area of 100%.

[Displaced fractures of the middle third of the forearm in children. The therapeutic considerations].

There been studied 100 cases of fractures of the middle third of both bones of forearm in child for to assess the correctitude of the therapy, based on the analysis of results. The most correct surgical techniques consist of osteosynthesis with Kirschner wire of the both bones, knowing the particularities of the fracture linea in child and the minimal tissues' damages. In the child younger then 10 years old, the open reduction is rarely necessary.
