The aim of this study was to evaluate home-made and commercial extenders for the cryopreservation of Rusa deer semen. After collection by electroejaculation, six ejaculates were diluted and frozen in TES-based, Tris-based and Triladyl extenders. Subjective motility, viability, morphology, acrosome integrity and membrane functionality were assessed post-thawing and after 1-hr incubation at 37°C (Thermal stress test).

Immunolocalization of inhibin-α and inhibin/activin βA and βB subunits in the testes of Asian elephant was determined. Testicular sections were immunostained with polyclonal antisera against inhibin subunit-α and inhibin/activin βA and βB using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method. Positive immunostaining against inhibin-α subunit was strongly present in Sertoli cells, and positive immunostaining for the inhibin/activin βA and βB subunits was observed in both Sertoli and Leydig cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the reproductive cycle of female Rusa deer in Thailand by measuring fecal hormones progesterone and 17β-estradiol over a year.
  • Three out of five hinds were pregnant at the start, and the hormonal data showed high progesterone levels during late pregnancy, with a drop at birth, indicating strong placental hormone production.
  • The research found that lactating hinds had lower hormone concentrations than non-lactating ones, suggesting that nursing impacts ovarian activity, and emphasizes fecal hormone monitoring as a useful tool for studying ovarian function in this deer species.
