Simulated performance of flexible sigmoidoscopy-based screening for advanced neoplasia detection in a Greek population.

Background: Flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS) is resource-conserving and may increase adherence to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening compared to total colonoscopy. We investigated the diagnostic performance of FS-based screening for advanced colorectal neoplasia (ACN), including advanced adenomatous neoplasms (AANs), advanced serrated lesions (ASLs) and CRCs.

Methods: Data from 2005 subjects undergoing average-risk screening colonoscopy in a single center in Greece were retrospectively reviewed.

Secondary extramedullary plasmacytoma of sigmoid colon in a patient with multiple myeloma: a case report.

Background: Extramedullary plasmacytoma is an uncommon tumor that most often involves the nasopharynx or upper respiratory tract. Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a type of plasma cell neoplasm that can present as a primary tumor or secondary to another plasma cell neoplasm, such as multiple myeloma. Secondary extramedullary plasmacytoma is usually noted in the advanced stages of the disease.

Advanced choroidal melanoma with a desirable aesthetic outcome after enucleation: A case report.

Choroidal melanoma is a rare ocular tumor. The present study reports the case of a 66-year-old male who presented with chronic headache and progressive visual loss. Physical eye examination and combined A- and B-mode ultrasonography detected choroidal melanoma.

Cold versus hot endoscopic mucosal resection for nonpedunculated colorectal polyps sized 6-10 mm: a randomized trial.

Background And Study Aims: Cold snare polypectomy is an established method for the resection of small colorectal polyps; however, significant incomplete resection rates still leave room for improvement. We aimed to assess the efficacy of cold snare endoscopic mucosal resection (CS-EMR), compared with hot snare endoscopic mucosal resection (HS-EMR), for nonpedunculated polyps sized 6 - 10 mm.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) share a unique genetic identity, functional behavior, and clinical course. Compared with tumors of the exocrine pancreas, they are rare and show a different biologic behavior and prognosis. On the basis of data from recent studies, all PNETs, outside of small insulinomas, should be considered potentially malignant and treated accordingly.

Community acquired quinolone-resistant Escherichia coli pyelonephritis complicated with multiple renal abscesses: a case report.

Acute pyelonephritis is a potentially organ-damaging and life-threatening infection. A 37-year old woman was admitted to Intensive Care Unit in septic shock and multi-organ failure due to acute pyelonephritis with systemic bacterial dissemination caused by a quinolone-resistant Escherichia coli. The patient, a previously healthy woman, reported recurrent episodes of urinary tract infection in the previous 3 years, which were treated with quinolones.

Solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas: an enigmatic tumor.

Solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas is a rare pancreatic tumor that predominantly occurs in young non-Caucasian women. Although most tumors show benign behavior, malignant degeneration may occur. A case of solid pseudopapillary pancreatic tumor in a Caucasian woman is presented that was investigated by endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and EUS-guided fine needle aspiration.

Secondary involvement of breast with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in a patient with HIV infection -- case report.

Secondary lymphoma of the breast is a rare entity in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). HIV infection is associated with an increased risk for developing NHL, however lymphomatous involvement of the breast in AIDS patients has rarely been reported. We present the case of a 33-year-old HIV-infected female patient with diffuse NHL who presented with a unilateral breast mass.

Aim: The gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is an uncommon tumor usually diagnosed by endoscopic biopsy or surgical resection. We evaluated the efficacy and accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy in the diagnosis of GIST.

Method: Seventeen patients with gastric GIST diagnosed by EUS-guided FNA were included in this study (from 2005 to 2007).

Intravascular B-cell lymphoma with leukemic presentation: case report and literature review.

Intravascular lymphoma is an extremely rare, disseminated, and aggressive extranodal CD20+ non-Hodgkin's lymphoma characterized by the presence of lymphoma cells only in the lumina of small vessels. We report a 72-year-old woman with a diagnosis of intravascular lymphoma presented with splenomegaly and leukemic appearance in the peripheral blood smear. Her clinical course was rapidly deteriorated before the initiation of specific chemotherapy and finally died due to multiorgan insufficiency.

A muscle mass in a patient with polymyalgia rheumatica.

We report the extremely uncommon case of a 77-year-old woman in whom a tumor found to be a melanotic schwannoma, arising from the right rectus abdominis muscle, was detected during investigation for a rheumatic disorder, finally identified as polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). Tumors of this type most commonly occur in spinal nerve roots, and their clinical behavior is very difficult to predict. As far as we are aware, this is the first reported case affecting the aforementioned site.

Ruptured tubo-ovarian abscess as a complication of IVF treatment: clinical, ultrasonographic and histopathologic findings. A case report.

Tuboovarian abscess is a rare complication of IVF treatment, which can be lethal on rupture. Hereby, we present a case of a ruptured tubo-ovarian abscess, following transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval for IVF and transcervical embryo trasfer in a 38-year-old white female patient with five years of primary infertility who underwent aspiration of bilateral hydrosalpinges at the time of oocyte retrieval. This case suggests that the reactivation of latent pelvic infection due to a previous pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) was the possible route of infection after transvaginal ultrasound-directed follicle aspiration--transcervical embryo transfer.
