Pancreatic fistula is a potentially morbid complication after distal pancreatectomy. Chronic glucocorticoid use is one of the risk factors for pancreatic fistula in pancreaticoduodenectomy, though it has not been reported in distal pancreatectomy. We explored whether chronic glucocorticoid use can be a risk factor for pancreatic fistula in distal pancreatectomy.

For example, iron chelation therapy is designed not only for the treatment of metal poisoning but also for some diseases that are induced by iron overload, cancer chemotherapy, and related diseases. However, the use of such metal chelators needs to be generally carried out very carefully, because of the side effects possibly due to the non-specific complexation with intracellular metal cations.

Background: Core symptoms of autism-spectrum disorder (ASD) have been associated with prefrontal cortex abnormalities. However, the mechanisms behind the observation remain incomplete, partially due to the challenges of modeling complex gray matter (GM) structures. This study aimed to identify GM microstructural alterations in adults with ASD using neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) and voxel-wise GM-based spatial statistics (GBSS) to reduce the partial volume effects from the white matter and cerebrospinal fluid.

Mid-term outcomes of temporary medial distal femoral hemiepiphysiodesis with and without medial patellofemoral ligament repair for recurrent patellar instability in skeletally immature patients with genu valgum.

Genu valgum contributes to patellar instability, though outcomes following temporary hemiepiphysiodesis via eight plating are less understood. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes and need for additional procedures following temporary hemiepiphysiodesis for the treatment of pediatric genu valgum and patellar instability, as well as evaluating the utility of a concurrent medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) repair. Patients who underwent medial distal femoral epiphysiodesis for the treatment of genu valgum and recurrent patellar instability were identified.

Fiber-Specific White Matter Alterations in Parkinson's Disease Patients with GBA Gene Mutations.

Background: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) carrying GBA gene mutations (GBA-PD) have a more aggressive disease course than those with idiopathic PD (iPD).

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate fiber-specific white matter (WM) differences in nonmedicated patients with early-stage GBA-PD and iPD using fixel-based analysis, a novel technique to assess tract-specific WM microstructural and macrostructural features comprehensively.

Methods: Fixel-based metrics, including microstructural fiber density (FD), macrostructural fiber-bundle cross section (FC), and a combination of FD and FC (FDC), were compared among 30 healthy control subjects, 16 patients with GBA-PD, and 35 patients with iPD.

It has been challenging to monitor the WM degeneration patterns underlying the clinical deficits in vivo. Here, a fiber-specific fiber density and fiber cross-section, and their combined measure estimated using fixel-based analysis (FBA), were cross-sectionally and longitudinally assessed in PSP (n = 20), CBS (n = 17), and healthy controls (n = 20).

On-shelf circulation of warm water toward the Totten Ice Shelf in East Antarctica.

The Totten Glacier in East Antarctica, with an ice volume equivalent to >3.5 m of global sea-level rise, is grounded below sea level and, therefore, vulnerable to ocean forcing. Here, we use bathymetric and oceanographic observations from previously unsampled parts of the Totten continental shelf to reveal on-shelf warm water pathways defined by deep topographic features.

Time-Lapse Observation of Crevice Corrosion in Grade 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel.

The objective of this study was to investigate and visualize the initiation and propagation of crevice corrosion in grade 2205 duplex stainless steel by means of time-lapse imaging. Transparent Poly-Methyl-Meth-Acrylate washer and disk were coupled with duplex stainless steel to create an artificial crevice, with electrochemical monitoring applied to obtain information about the nucleation and propagation characteristics. All nucleation sites and corroding areas inside crevices were recorded in situ using a digital microscope set-up.

Podoplanin (PDPN) is a prognostic factor and is involved in several mechanisms of tumor progression in human squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Canine non-tonsillar SCC (NTSCC) is a common oral tumor in dogs and has a highly invasive characteristic. In this study, we investigated the function of PDPN in canine NTSCC.

The E3 ubiquitin ligase RFFL is an apoptotic inhibitor highly expressed in cancers and its knockdown suppresses cancer cell growth and sensitizes to chemotherapy. RFFL also participates in peripheral protein quality control which removes the functional cell surface ΔF508-CFTR channel and reduces the efficacy of pharmaceutical therapy for cystic fibrosis (CF). Although RFFL inhibitors have therapeutic potential for both cancer and CF, they remain undiscovered.

Drug-induced altered self-presentation increases tumor immunogenicity.

Anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) drug abacavir (ABC) binds to the specific allele of human leukocyte antigen (HLA-B*57:01) and activates CD8 T cells by presenting altered abnormal peptides. Here, we examined the effect of ABC-induced altered self-presentation by HLA-B*57:01 on immunogenicity of cancer cells and CD8 T-cell-dependent anti-tumor immunity. We established human-mouse chimeric HLA-B*57:01-expressing tumor cell lines (B16F10 and 3LL) and tested the anti-tumor effect of ABC in vivo.

Comparative Analysis of Photon Stereotactic Radiotherapy and Carbon-Ion Radiotherapy for Elderly Patients with Stage I Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

The emergence of an aging society and technological advances have made radiotherapy, especially stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), a common alternative to surgery for elderly patients with early stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) is also an attractive treatment option with potentially lower toxicity for elderly patients with comorbidities. We compared the clinical outcomes of the two modalities using Japanese multicenter data.

Acetabular Labral Reconstruction: Review of Techniques and Outcomes.

Purpose Of Review: To analyze advances in labral reconstruction, and to discuss the literature relating to efficacy, outcomes, and technical considerations of labral reconstruction.

Recent Findings: The available evidence suggests that labral reconstruction is a safe and effective procedure that can improve pain and function in patients with severe and/or complex labral tears. The superiority of labral reconstruction over labral repair is uncertain, and it remains unclear what graft type and technique should be used in labral reconstructions.

Podoplanin Drives Amoeboid Invasion in Canine and Human Mucosal Melanoma.

Unlabelled: Mucosal melanoma metastasizes at an early stage of the disease in human and dog. We revealed that overexpression of podoplanin in tumor invasion fronts (IF) was related to poor prognosis of dogs with mucosal melanoma. Moreover, podoplanin expressed in canine mucosal melanoma cells promotes proliferation and aggressive amoeboid invasion by activating Rho-associated kinase (ROCK)-myosin light chain 2 (MLC2) signaling.

Optical Resolution of Carboxylic Acid Derivatives of Homoleptic Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes via Diastereomers Formed with Chiral Auxiliaries.

We report on a facile method for the optical resolution of cyclometalated iridium(III) (Ir(III)) complexes via diastereomers formed with chiral auxiliaries. The racemic carboxylic acids of Ir(III) complexes (- (-Ir(ppyCOH) (ppy: 2-phenylpyridine)), - (-Ir(tpyCOH) (tpy: 2-(4'-tolyl)pyridine)), and - (-Ir(mpiqCOH) (mpiq: 1-(4'-methylphenyl)isoquinoline))) were converted into the diastereomers, Δ- and Λ-forms of - (from -), - (from -), - (from -), and - (from -), respectively, by the condensation with (12)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane or (12)-2-aminocyclohexanol. The resulting diastereomers were separated by HPLC (with a nonchiral column) or silica gel column chromatography, and their absolute stereochemistry was determined by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis and CD (circular dichroism) spectra.

Nasal Packing Materials and Placement Duration on Wound Healing in Nasal Mucosa: An Animal Study.

Objective: The histological findings of wound healing depending on different nasal packing materials and replacement periods were lacking.

Methods: Mucosal defects were created in the nasal septum of rabbits and covered with Spongel®, Algoderm®, or Nasopore®, which were cleaned on Day 14. To investigate the effect of replacement durations, Spongel® was removed on Days 3 and 7.

Type II Cryoglobulinemic Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis Caused by Mucosa-associated Lymphoid Tissue Lymphoma.

A 67-year-old man complained of lower limb edema with a purpuric skin rash. Laboratory tests revealed proteinuria, elevated serum creatinine levels, and low serum albumin levels.
