Microbe-associated molecular pattern (MAMP)-triggered immunity plays critical roles in the basal resistance defense response in plants. Chitin and peptidoglycan (PGN) are major molecular patterns for fungi and bacteria, respectively. Two rice (Oryza sativa) lysin motif-containing proteins, OsLYP4 and OsLYP6, function as receptors that sense bacterial PGN and fungal chitin.

Catalyzed by Rhodococcus erythropolis AJ270, a nitrile hydratase-amidase containing microbial whole-cell catalyst under mild conditions, enantioselective desymmetrizations of meso-cyclopentane-1,3-dicarbonitriles and cyclopentane-1,3-dicarboxamides were studied. Although the nitrile hydratase was found to exhibit high enzymatic activity, but low 1R enantioselectivity toward dinitriles, a number of 2,2-unsymmetrically substituted meso-cyclopentane-1,3-dicarboxamide substrates were converted by the 1S enantioselective amidase into quaternary carbon-bearing enantiopure (1S,2R,3R)-3-carbamoylcyclopentanecarboxylic acids in yields up to 94 %. The application of the method was demonstrated by convenient and practical transformations of the resulting (1S,2R,3R)-2-allyl-3-carbamoylcyclopentanecarboxylic acid derivatives into functionalized cyclopentane-fused δ-lactam and δ-lactone compounds.

Cartilage regeneration after trauma is still a great challenge for clinicians and researchers due to many reasons, such as joint load-bearing, synovial movement and the paucity of endogenous repair cells. To overcome these limitations, we constructed a functional biomaterial using a biphasic scaffold platform and a bone-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs)-specific affinity peptide. The biphasic scaffold platform retains more cells homogeneously within the sol-gel transition of chitosan and provides sufficient solid matrix strength.

Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2), initially identified as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), recruits immune cells to the central nervous system (CNS) during autoimmune inflammation. CCL2 can be expressed by multiple cell types, but which cells are responsible for CCL2 function during acute and chronic phases of autoimmune disease is not known. We determined the role of CCL2 in astrocytes in vivo during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) by using Cre-loxP gene deletion.

Hepatocyte transplantation is considered to be a promising therapy for patients with liver diseases. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) provide an unlimited source for the generation of functional hepatocytes. In this study, we generated iPSCs from porcine ear fibroblasts (PEFs) by overexpressing Sox2, Klf4, Oct4, and c-Myc (SKOM), and developed a novel strategy for the efficient differentiation of hepatocyte-like cells from porcine iPSCs by following the processes of early liver development.

Background And Purpose: Stroke treatment is constrained by limited treatment windows and the clinical inefficacy of agents that showed preclinical promise. Yet animal and clinical data suggest considerable poststroke plasticity, which could allow treatment with recovery-modulating agents. Memantine is a well-tolerated N-methyl-D-aspartate glutamate receptor antagonist in common use for Alzheimer disease.

Purpose: The purposes of our study were to determine normative C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) values from a retrospective review of patients with and without infection after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and to determine CRP and ESR threshold levels that can serve as diagnostic indicators of infection. We also tried to draw a curve of CRP and ESR value changes after treatment of ACL infection to evaluate the response to treatment of the infection.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed of arthroscopic ACL reconstruction patients from 2007 to 2008 (noninfection group) and all patients with postoperative intra-articular infection from 1997 to 2010 (infection group).

Hydrogels are attractive for cartilage tissue engineering because of their high plasticity and similarity with the native cartilage matrix. However, one critical drawback of hydrogels for osteochondral repair is their inadequate mechanical strength. To address this limitation, we constructed a solid-supported thermogel comprising a chitosan hydrogel system and demineralized bone matrix.

Helium ion (He(+)) beam produced by a heavy ion linear accelerator was used to simulate α-rays for studying the radiation effect on 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquid ([C4mim][NTf2]). The water-soluble radiolytic products of [C4mim][NTf2] under He(+) beam irradiation were analysed, and it was found that they were similar to those by γ-ray irradiation, but their amount was much less than that by γ-ray irradiation, which was attributed to the recombination of [C4mim][NTf2] radical cations in track by high linear energy transfer (LET) radiations of the He(+) beam. The extracting behaviour of Dy(3+) using irradiated [C4mim][NTf2] in combination with alkylated bis-triazinyl-pyridine (CA-BTP) was assessed, and found that the influence of He(+) beam on the extraction was less than that of γ-ray irradiation.
