Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of injury-related death and disability. In high-income countries, TBI is most prevalent among the older population (≥65 years), commonly caused by falls. Though age at injury is associated with increased risk of mortality and poor outcome, the underlying mechanisms are unclear.

Targeted temperature management (TTM), specifically therapeutic hypothermia, has been proposed to provide neuroprotective and mortality benefits for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors. This proposition was based on small-scale trials from the early 2000s, leading to its incorporation into various international guidelines. The proposed neuroprotective mechanisms include reducing cerebral metabolic rate, stabilizing the blood-brain barrier, reducing the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, and suppressing apoptotic pathways.

Article Synopsis
  • Fungi make special substances called secondary metabolites (SMs) that are useful in farming, medicine, and health.
  • Scientists can find and study the genes that create these substances, thanks to new technology, but there are still challenges when it comes to using them in products.
  • The study looks at how new CRISPR/Cas tools help scientists understand and improve the production of these special substances in fungi, discussing both the problems with this technology and ideas for making it better in the future.

Metformin is a cornerstone therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus due to its glucose-lowering efficacy and additional benefits such as reducing cardiovascular mortality. However, accumulating evidence suggests an association between long-term metformin use and vitamin B12 deficiency, which can lead to serious clinical consequences. This review aims to synthesize current knowledge on the pathogenesis, prevalence, clinical implications, and management of metformin-induced vitamin B12 deficiency.

Background: This study systematically designed and optimised a transniosomal formulation containing embelin for skin cancer management. The transniosomes were developed using a rotary evaporation method and then optimised using a Box-Behnken design.

Results: The optimized embelin-loaded transniosomes (Opt-EMB-TNs) exhibited a vesicle size of 149.

An acute abdomen that is tender to palpation often represents a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate surgical or medical management. We present a case of acute abdomen with peritoneal signs and symptoms due to epiploic appendagitis (EA) that resolved with a single dose of ibuprofen. EA often mimics appendicitis, diverticulitis, and rarely cholecystitis based on its location.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the airways, posing a substantial health threat to a large number of people worldwide. Bronchodilators effectively alleviate symptoms of airway obstruction by inducing relaxation of the smooth muscles in the airways, thereby reducing breathlessness and enhancing overall quality of life. The drug targeting to lungs poses significant challenges; however, this issue can be resolved by employing nano- and micro-particles drug delivery systems.

Functional foods have become an essential element of the diet in developed nations, due to their health benefits and nutritive values. Such food products are only called functional if they, "In addition to basic nutrition, have valuable effects on one or multiple functions of the human body, thereby enhancing general and physical conditions and/or reducing the risk of disease progression". Functional foods are currently one of the most extensively researched areas in the food and nutrition sciences.

In both premenopausal and postmenopausal women, oestrogens play a critical role in the development of breast cancer. Aromatase is an enzyme that catalyses the final step in the biosynthesis of estrogen and has emerged as a promising target for therapeutic intervention. This study aimed to design and evaluate novel 1-(4-(benzamido)phenyl)-3-arylurea derivatives as potential aromatase inhibitors.

This study aimed to develop and optimize karanjin-loaded ethosomal nanogel formulation and evaluate its efficacy in alleviating symptoms of psoriasis in an animal model induced by imiquimod. These karanjin-loaded ethosomal nanogel, were formulated to enhance drug penetration into the skin and its epidermal retention. Karanjin was taken to formulate ethosomes due to its potential ani-psoriatic activity.

A number of post-mortem studies conducted in transplanted Huntington's disease (HD) patients from various trials have reported the presence of pathological and misfolded proteins, in particular mutant huntingtin (mHtt) and phosphorylated tau neuropil threads, in the healthy grafted tissue. Here, we extended these observations with histological analysis of post-mortem tissue from three additional HD patients who had received similar striatal allografts from the fetal tissue transplantation trial conducted in Los Angeles in 1998. Immunohistochemical staining was performed using anti-mHtt antibodies, EM48 and MW7, as well as anti-hyperphosphorylated tau antibodies, AT8 and CP13.

This research work aimed to develop and evaluate proniosomes for the oral delivery of the lipophilic drug Irbesartan (IRB) to improve its solubility and bioavailability. Proniosomes of Irbesartan were formulated using a lipid, surfactant, and carrier by a slurry method. Based on the prepared preliminary trial batches and their evaluation, the formulation was optimized by employing a Box-Behnken design (BBD) in which concentrations of span 60 (), cholesterol (), and mannitol () were used as three independent variables and the vesicular size (VS) (), % entrapment efficiency (% EE) (), and % cumulative drug release (% CDR) () were used as dependent variables.

Temperature-induced elongation of hypocotyls, petioles, and roots, together with hyponastic leaf responses, constitute key model phenotypes that can be used to assess a plant's capacity for thermomorphogenesis. Phenotypic responses are often quantified at a single time point during seedling development at different temperatures. However, to capture growth dynamics, several time points need to be assessed, and ideally continuous measurements are taken.
