Acinetobacter baumannii is a well-known nosocomial pathogen that commonly inhabits soil and water and has been implicated in numerous hospital-acquired infections. The existing methods for detecting A. baumannii have several drawbacks, such as being time-consuming, expensive, labor-intensive, and unable to distinguish between closely related Acinetobacter species.

Background And Aim: Existing real-time reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-qPCR) has certain limitations for the point-of-care detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) since it requires sophisticated instruments, reagents and skilled laboratory personnel. In this study, we evaluated an assay termed the reverse transcriptase-polymerase spiral reaction (RT-PSR) for rapid and visual detection of SARS-CoV-2.

Methods: The RT-PSR assay was optimized using RdRp gene and evaluated for the detection of SARS-CoV-2.

Multi-drug resistance (MDR) in Salmonella is one of the major reasons for foodborne outbreaks worldwide. Decreased susceptibility of Salmonella Typhi to first-line drugs such as ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, and azithromycin has raised concern. Reduced outer membrane proteins (OMPs) permeability and increased efflux pump transportation are considered to be the main reasons for the emergence of antibiotic resistance in Salmonella.

Homologous recombination (HR) is critically important for chromosomal replication, as well as DNA damage repair in all life forms. In Escherichia coli, the process of HR comprises (i) two parallel presynaptic pathways that are mediated, respectively, by proteins RecB/C/D and RecF/O/R/Q; (ii) a synaptic step mediated by RecA that leads to generation of Holliday junctions (HJs); and (iii) postsynaptic steps mediated sequentially by HJ-acting proteins RuvA/B/C followed by proteins PriA/B/C of replication restart. Combined loss of RuvA/B/C and a DNA helicase UvrD is synthetically lethal, which is attributed to toxicity caused by accumulated HJs since viability in these double mutant strains is restored by removal of the presynaptic or synaptic proteins RecF/O/R/Q or RecA, respectively.

Adulteration in Basmati rice is a rife phenomenon either due to unavoidable postharvest procedures or intentionally by exporters to gain more profit. SSR marker based multiplex and singleplex assay is being used for detection and quantification of adulteration in Basmati rice using bulked-seed. Identification of different varieties present in the complex Basmati sample which is a mix of more than two varieties is not feasible from analysis on the bulked-seed.

Micronutrient deficiencies are mostly hidden; clinically less visible compared to macronutrient deficiencies. Food fortification with multiple micronutrients (MMN) is provided for children between 6-23 months, daily for two months at three-time points. We assessed the acceptance and adherence of this nutritional intervention in an urban community setting in Sri Lanka.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a multifactorial progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disorder characterized by severe memory impairment and cognitive disability in the middle and old-aged human population. There are no proven drugs for AD treatment and prevention. In Ayurveda, medhya plants are used to prepare Rasayana, and its consumption improves memory and cognition.

The widespread use of lead (Pb) has caused global contamination, inevitable human exposure, and public health problems. Pb neurotoxicity has been linked to various human diseases, but its associated mechanism causing neurotoxicity is unknown. Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism has been used to study the mechanism involved in Pb-caused neurotoxicity and the potential role of antioxidants in ameliorating its harmful effects.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by three main behavioural symptoms: abnormal social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication impairments, and repetitive and restricted activities or interests. Even though the exact aetiology of ASD remains unknown, studies have shown a link between genetics and environmental pollutants. Heavy metal lead (Pb), the environmental pollutant, is associated with ASD.

Toward the need for solid-state fluorescent quantum dots, resistant to self-quenching, we describe a solvothermal-assisted sol-gel method to synthesize Se quantum dots. Morphological and crystalline characterizations reveal that Se quantum dots (average size 3-8 nm) have a trigonal crystal structure. The presence of planar defects (dislocations, stacking faults, twins, and grain boundaries) suggests formation of Se nanocrystallites through aggregation-based crystal growth mechanisms.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic caused by a novel coronavirus called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). To date, the virus has been detected in 219 countries of the world. Therefore, managing the disease becomes the priority, in which detecting the presence of the virus is a crucial step.

Tetracyclines (TCs) are a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics having vast human, veterinary, and aquaculture applications. The continuous release of TCs residues into the environment and the inadequate removal through the conventional treatment systems result in its prevalent occurrence in soil, surface water, groundwater, and even in drinking water. As aqueous TCs contamination is the tip of the iceberg, and TCs possess good sorption capacity towards soil, sediments, sludge, and manure, it is insufficient to rely on the sorptive removal in the conventional water treatment plants.

The primary reason for foodborne illness is improper seafood safety testing, and hence, an appropriate tool for testing is the key to control the outbreaks. The current study aimed to develop a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay to detect pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus, important foodborne pathogen, targeting tdh, and trh genes. The specificity of the LAMP assay was good without any false-positive and false-negative results.

Background & Objectives: Cells and cell proportions may indicate the equilibrium status of the immune system. The present study was conducted to evaluate the role of cytokines and the immunocompetent cells as biomarkers of remission in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients intended to withdraw or reduce disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) treatment.

Methods: This prospective observational study involved newly diagnosed and treated RA patients who fulfilled 2010 American College of Rheumatology (ACR)/European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) criteria.

The detection and monitoring of Vibrio parahaemolyticus pathogen in aquatic foods have become essential for preventing outbreaks. In this study, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay with the azo dye, hydroxynaphthol blue (HNB) was developed targeting species-specific tlh gene. The assay was carried out on 62 seafood samples that included clam and shrimp and compared with conventional LAMP assay performed with the commonly used fluorescent dye, conventional PCR, and real-time PCR (RT-PCR).

Genetically pure cytoplasmic male sterile line (A-line) is essential to generate pure hybrid seeds in order to harness the yield heterosis in rice. Conventionally, seed purity testing is carried by grow-out test, which has many limitations. Seed purity assessments based on molecular markers reduce the time required for analysis significantly.

As dairy industries has been emerged as one of the most rapidly developing industry in both small as well as large scale, the volume of effluent generated is also very high. In the present study, aerated electrocoagulation combined with phytoremediation treatment was conducted in dairy industry wastewater. Electrocoagulation was performed with aluminium and iron electrodes and effect of various operating parameters such as electrode combination, pH, and voltage were tested.

Background: Malathion is the most widely used organophosphate pesticide in agriculture. Increasing cancer incidence in agricultural workers and their children links to the exposure of malathion. Identification of genes involved in the process of carcinogenesis is essential for exploring the role of malathion.
