Article Synopsis
  • Enterococcus mundtii AM_AQ_BC8, isolated from biofouled membranes, is identified as a probiotic bacterium with a strong ability to produce L-lactic acid.
  • It exhibits antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties against bacteria like Pseudomonas spp.
  • Genome sequencing revealed significant genes related to lactic acid production and probiotic traits, and the strain has been registered in GenBank (accession no. SAMN32531201).

Membrane biofouling in water purification plants is a serious issue of worldwide concern. Various chemical, physical, and biochemical processes are practised for membrane clean-up. A high-dosage treatment adversely affects the life expectancy of the membrane, and minimum dosage seems unable to deteriorate the biofilms on the membrane.
