One of the suggested ways of controlling the electronic properties of graphene is to establish a periodic potential modulation on it, which could be achieved by self-assembly of ordered molecular lattices. We have studied the self-assembly of cobalt phthalocyanines (CoPc) on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown graphene transferred onto silicon dioxide (SiO2) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrates. Our scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments show that, on both substrates, CoPc forms a square lattice.

Graphene nanostructures, where quantum confinement opens an energy gap in the band structure, hold promise for future electronic devices. To realize the full potential of these materials, atomic-scale control over the contacts to graphene and the graphene nanostructure forming the active part of the device is required. The contacts should have a high transmission and yet not modify the electronic properties of the active region significantly to maintain the potentially exciting physics offered by the nanoscale honeycomb lattice.

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and minilaparotomy cholecystectomy (MC) are the two most commonly performed mini-invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of symptomatic gallstone disease, but the long-term outcome after these two procedures has not been compared in prospective clinical trials. We therefore investigated the outcome after LC and MC in 127 patients operated at Kuopio University Hospital.

Patients And Methods: Initially 157 patients with uncomplicated symptomatic gallstones were randomised to MC (n = 85) or LC (n = 72) over a 5-year period (1998-2004), and 127 of them (81 %), 69/85 with MC and 58/72 with LC, were reached for a follow-up interview 10.

Thermal models for the north polar region of Mercury, calculated from topographic measurements made by the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft, show that the spatial distribution of regions of high radar backscatter is well matched by the predicted distribution of thermally stable water ice. MESSENGER measurements of near-infrared surface reflectance indicate bright surfaces in the coldest areas where water ice is predicted to be stable at the surface, and dark surfaces within and surrounding warmer areas where water ice is predicted to be stable only in the near subsurface. We propose that the dark surface layer is a sublimation lag deposit that may be rich in impact-derived organic material.

Background: Snail is a transcriptional factor which is known to influence the epitheliomesenchymal transition (EMT) by regulating adhesion proteins such as E-cadherin and claudins as well as matrix metalloproteases (MMP).

Methods: To evaluate the functional importance of snail, a transciptional factor involved in EMT in lung tumors, we investigated its expression in a large set of lung carcinomas by immunohistochemistry. Expression of snail and effects of snail knockdown was studied in cell lines.

The aim of the present study was to investigate how contaminant exposure and reduced food intake affect tissue distribution and biotransformation of halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs) in Arctic seabirds using herring gull (Larus argentatus) as a model species. Herring gull chicks were exposed for 44 d to cod liver oil containing a typical mixture of contaminants. Following exposure, food intake was reduced for a one-week period in a subgroup of the chicks.

Elk (Cervus elaphus) are known to shift habitat use in response to environmental modifications, including those associated with various forms of energy development. The specific behavioral responses underlying these trends, however, have not been effectively studied. To investigate such effects, we examined elk response to habitat alteration near natural gas wells in Las Animas County, Colorado, USA in 2008-2010.

Acetaldehyde is a known mutagenic substance and has been classified as a group-one carcinogen by the WHO. It is possible to bind acetaldehyde locally in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract with the semi-essential amino acid l-cysteine, which reacts covalently with acetaldehyde and forms compound 2-methyl-thiozolidine-4-carboxylic acid (MTCA). The Caco-2 cell line was used to determine the permeation of l-cysteine and MTCA, as well as the possible cell toxicity of both substances.

In a specific inhalation challenge (SIC) test the patient inhales an occupational agent in controlled environment and the subsequent asthmatic reaction is monitored. SIC is considered as the reference standard when confirming the diagnosis of sensitizer-induced occupational asthma. However, SIC is not always needed for the diagnosis; in many cases the causal relationship between an occupational agent and asthma can be shown also with serial peak flow measurements and specific immunologic testing.

Despite the enormous interest in the properties of graphene and the potential of graphene nanostructures in electronic applications, the study of quantum-confined states in atomically well-defined graphene nanostructures remains an experimental challenge. Here, we study graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with well-defined edges in the zigzag direction, grown by chemical vapor deposition on an Ir(111) substrate by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We measure the atomic structure and local density of states of individual GQDs as a function of their size and shape in the range from a couple of nanometers up to ca.
