Article Synopsis
  • Specialized primary care internal medicine (PC IM) residency programs focus on providing dedicated training for primary care but do so in varied ways; a survey of 45 programs revealed insights into their curricular content and clinical experiences.
  • * The study found that PC IM programs include an average of 22.8 weeks of ambulatory training and around 69.4 continuity clinics each year for their trainees, with over half of graduates pursuing careers in primary care or general internal medicine.
  • * There is a weak correlation between the type of training received and career outcomes; notably, certain training areas, like women's health and mental health, positively influence the likelihood of graduates entering primary care fields, while subspecialty pursuits were associated with less focus on leadership training.*
