Objective: evaluate the effectiveness of MPI to predict mortality in patients with peritonitis in Santa Casa de Misericordia de Vitoria Hospital (HSCMV).

Methods: a longitudinal observational cohort retrospectively study, with a sample of 75 patients diagnosed with peritonitis between January 2010 to December 2 of 2015, in HSCMV and with all the necessary criteria for the calculation of IPM.

The purpose of this study was to develop poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanoparticles containing ursolic acid (UA) by an emulsification-solvent evaporation technique and evaluate the radical scavenging activity over hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and cytotoxicity over erythrocytes and tumor cells. Nanoparticles were successfully obtained and presented mean size of 246nm with spherical or slightly oval morphology, negative zeta potential and 96% of UA encapsulation efficiency. Analyses of FTIR, XRD and DSC-DTG suggest interaction/complexation of UA with PLA matrix and drug amorphization promoted by nanoencapsulation process.

Background: Anti-tumour necrosis factor [TNF] therapy in combination with thiopurine is the most effective strategy for Crohn's disease, but raises safety concerns.

Methods: In a retrospective multicentre study, we investigated long-term outcome of patients starting anti-TNF monotherapy for Crohn's disease and investigated whether introducing an immunomodulator in patients losing response to anti-TNF monotherapy is effective for resetting immunogenicity.

Results: A total of 350 adult patients with Crohn's disease received either infliximab [n = 178, 51%] or adalimumab [n = 172, 49%] monotherapy.

The main objective of this work is to present the optimization of the biotransformation of R-(+)-limonene and (-)-β-pinene aiming at the production of α-terpineol by strains of fungal and yeasts previously isolated by our research group using the methodology of experimental design. New optimized experimental data on α-terpineol production by the biotransformation of R-(+)-limonene and (-)-β-pinene using newly isolated microorganisms are reported in this work. Biginelli reactions have been monitored by direct infusion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and key cationic intermediates involved in this three-component reaction have been intercepted and further characterized by tandem MS experiments (ESI-MS/MS). Density functional theory calculations were also used to investigate the feasibility of the major competing mechanisms proposed for the Biginelli reaction. The experimental and theoretical results were found to corroborate the iminium mechanism proposed by Folkers and Johnson, whereas no intermediates directly associated with either the more energy demanding Knoevenagel or enamine mechanisms could be intercepted.

The present paper describes the phytochemical and anti-staphylococcal activity investigation of the dichloromethane extract of the Brazilian plant Zizyphus joazeiro Mart. The purification steps were guided by bioassays against 17 bacterial strains of clinical sources, including methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and -sensitive (MSSA) Staphylococcus aureus as well as MRSA (ATCC 33591) and MSSA (ATCC 29213) reference strains. The lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution of rac-1-phenylethanol with vinyl acetate as acyl donor and cyclohexane as solvent has been investigated applying both microwave dielectric heating and conventional thermal heating in order to probe the existence of nonthermal microwave effects. All transformations were conducted at 40 degrees C in a dedicated reactor setup that allowed accurate internal reaction temperature measurements with use of fiber-optic probes. Quartz reaction vessels that allow higher levels of microwave power to be administered to the reaction mixture were used for all experiments.

Herein, we report reactivity studies of the mononuclear water-soluble complex [Mn(II)(HPClNOL)(eta(1)-NO(3))(eta(2)-NO(3))] 1, where HPClNOL = 1-(bis-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amino)-3-chloropropan-2-ol, toward peroxides (H(2)O(2) and tert-butylhydroperoxide). Both the catalase (in aqueous solution) and peroxidase (in CH(3)CN) activities of 1 were evaluated using a range of techniques including electronic absorption spectroscopy, volumetry (kinetic studies), pH monitoring during H(2)O(2) disproportionation, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in the positive ion mode [ESI(+)-MS], and gas chromatography (GC). Electrochemical studies showed that 1 can be oxidized to Mn(III) and Mn(IV).

In this paper, we describe the synthesis of a novel class of pseudo-peptides derived from isomannide and several oxazolones as potential inhibitors of serine proteases as well as preliminary pharmacological assays for hepatitis C. Hepatitis C, dengue and West Nile fever are among the most important flaviviruses that share one important serine protease enzyme. Serine proteases belong to the most studied class of proteolytic enzymes and are a primary target in the drug development field.

In this work, nine tetrasubstituted derivatives [NH(2), OCH(3), Li, Na, Si(CH(3))(3)/SiH(2)CH(3,) P(CH(3))(2), Cl, F, and CN] of the spiropentadiene dication were analyzed within the framework of QTAIM. In the studied series, the electron-withdrawing substituents destabilize the ptC-containing spiropentadiene dication. On the other hand, stabilization of this dication is possible for electron-donating substituents only through sigma bonds, such as Li and Na.

A vanadyl complex with the ligand (bis(1-methylimidazol-2-yl)methyl)(2-(pyridyl-2-yl)ethyl)amine was synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray crystallography, elemental analyses, cyclic voltammetry and infrared, electronic and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. This compound was designed under the so called hybrid concept. It shows to be able to promiscuously use hydrogen peroxide to oxidize bromide and to catalyze the oxidation of benzene and cyclohexane with very good selectivities.

A missense mutation at codon 640 in the APC gene was identified in a familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patient, however, its pathological consequence remained unclear. Here we found that this missense mutation interferes at the nucleotide level with an exonic splicing regulatory element and leads to aberrant splicing of the mutant APC transcript rather than exerting its effect through the observed amino acid change. Analysis of the patient RNA revealed complete skipping of exon 14 in transcripts from the mutant APC allele, leading to a frameshift and a premature stop codon.

Translocations t(14;18)(q32;q21) and t(11;14)(q13;q32) are recurrent findings in follicular lymphoma (FL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), respectively. However, the molecular counterparts of these translocations can only be detected in up to 75% of FL and 50% of MCL cases using routine techniques.
