Eutrophication and rising water temperature in freshwaters may increase the total production of a lake while simultaneously reducing the nutritional quality of food web components. We evaluated how cyanobacteria blooms, driven by agricultural eutrophication (in eutrophic Lake Köyliöjärvi) or global warming (in mesotrophic Lake Pyhäjärvi), influence the biomass and structure of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish communities. In terms of the nutritional value of food web components, we evaluated changes in the ω-3 and ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of phytoplankton and consumers at different trophic levels.

No data exists on multinucleation rate among frozen-thawed embryos.
Methods: De novo multinucleation and the number of multinucleated embryos on day two of embryo culture before freezing (D2) (n=415), at thawing (D2t) (n=320) and after an overnight culture after thawing (D3t) (n=265) was recorded.
Background And Objective: The degree of cycle control achieved with a hormonal contraceptive method is an important determinant of its acceptance and continuation. This study set out to compare the cycle control and bleeding profile of drospirenone (DRSP) 3 mg/ethinylestradiol (EE) 20 μg in a 24-active pill/4-inert pill (24/4) regimen (YAZ®) with those of desogestrel (DSG) 150 μg/EE 20 μg in a 21/7 regimen (Mercilon®), an established European combined oral contraceptive (COC).
Methods: Bleeding data from women aged 17-36 years who received either DRSP 3 mg/EE 20 μg in a 24/4 regimen (n = 1285) or DSG 150 μg/EE 20 μg in a 21/7 regimen (n = 471) during four clinical studies were pooled and analysed over seven treatment cycles.
Objective: To determine the contraceptive efficacy of a low-dose combined oral contraceptive containing ethinyloestradiol (EE) 20 μg/drospirenone (drsp) 3mg administered for 24 days followed by a four-day hormone-free interval (24/4 regimen), by pooling data from four clinical trials.
Study Design: Data on the occurrence of pregnancy during treatment in four open-label trials that enrolled healthy female volunteers aged 17-36 years, who received EE 20 μg/drsp 3mg in a 24/4 regimen for 7 or 13 cycles, were pooled.
Results: Sixteen pregnancies occurred among 2386 women during 729,537 days (26,055 cycles) of treatment exposure, resulting in a Pearl Index (PI) of 0.
Background: The study was conducted to compare cycle control, bleeding pattern and efficacy of two low-dose combined oral contraceptives.
Study Design: Four hundred fifty-three women were randomized to receive a 24/4 regimen of drospirenone 3 mg/ethinyl estradiol 20 mcg (drsp 3 mg/EE 20 mcg; n=230) or a 21/7 regimen of desogestrel 150 mcg/EE 20 mcg (DSG 150 mcg/EE 20 mcg; n=223), and recorded bleeding daily over 7 treatment cycles.

Objective: To study gene expression profiles of connective tissue components in polycystic ovaries using complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) array technology.
Design: Descriptive study of normal and polycystic human ovarian biopsy samples analyzed by cDNA array hybridizations.
Setting: Experimental laboratory research.
Objectives: The present study aims at finding out whether a connection exists between altered serum free beta-hCG and/or alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels and the manifestation of specific pregnancy complications [i.e. gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) or intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP)].

In the present study, we have analysed whether some cases of unexplained infertility and recurrent abortions could be explained by abnormal production or turnover of endometrial ECM. Comparison of mRNA levels of a panel of collagens, matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP) and cathepsins in the samples revealed higher levels of type I collagen, MMP-2 and cathepsin H and decreased levels of TIMP-3 mRNA in mid-secretory endometrium of patients with unexplained infertility and/or recurrent miscarriages when compared with normal mid-secretory endometrium.

The influence of the number of embryos transferred and the amount of gonadotrophins used on the marker levels was also evaluated.
Methods: The study population consisted of 58 IVF, 32 ICSI and 26 frozen embryo transfer (FET) singleton pregnancies.
Background: Microdeletions in the Y-chromosome are known to cause a significant proportion of azoo- and oligozoospermia in men. The reported frequency of deletions varies greatly between the studies. Probable reasons for this variation are different selection criteria and number of patients included, and possibly also methodological aspects, whereas the contribution of environmental and genetic factors is not known.

In the present study, we used Northern hybridization to demonstrate the presence of mRNAs for cathepsins B, H, K, L and S in human endometrium during both the proliferative and secretory phases of menstrual cycle. The mRNA levels for cathepsins H and K were significantly lower in secretory phase endometrium in comparison with proliferative phase endometrium.

Cathepsins B, H, K, L and S belong to a family of lysosomal cysteine proteinases which participate in a variety of proteolytic processes, including degradation of extracellular matrix. Although the presence of cathepsin mRNAs in the ovary has been reported earlier, very little information is available on their temporospatial expression. In the present study, Northern analysis revealed cyclic changes in the mRNA levels for cathepsins B, H, K, L and S during the 4-day oestrous cycle in the mouse ovary.

The objective of this study was to examine whether placental expression of syndecan 1 in preeclampsia differs from that in normal pregnancy and whether gestational age and fetal growth affect syndecan 1 expression.
Study Design: An immunohistochemical analysis of 30 placentas of women with severe preeclampsia and 15 placentas of women without preeclampsia was performed with the monoclonal anti-syndecan 1 antibody B-B4.
FGF-8 is a mitogenic growth factor, which is widely expressed during embryonic development but only at a very low level in adult tissues. Alternative splicing of the human FGF-8 gene potentially allows coding for 4 protein isoforms (a, b, e, f), which differ in their transforming capacity. The FGF-8 isoforms preferentially activate the receptors FGFR1IIIc, FGFR2IIIc, FGFR3IIIc and FGFR4.

Design: Immunoblotting and immunohistochemical analyses of the localization and staining intensity of IRS-1 and IRS-2 in the ovaries of women with the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and gestational diabetes mellitus.
Setting: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Turku University Central Hospital.
The main aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the occurrence of hypothyroidism among Finnish women with infertility. For this purpose, the records of 335 women presenting for the first time with infertility at the outpatient clinic of reproductive endocrinology at Turku University Central Hospital during a 3-year period (January 1992 to December 1994) were reviewed. Due to missing data, 36 women were excluded from the analysis.

In the ovary, differentiation of germinal cells into primordial follicles, functional ovulatory follicles and corpus luteum, all take place in a connective tissue matrix. We postulated that extracellular matrix (ECM) of the ovary participates actively in ovarian functions. To test this, the mRNA levels for several ECM components were determined in the mouse ovary at six distinct stages of the 4-day oestrous cycle.
