The usefulness of the combined use of MALDI-TOF MS from a subculture with 3-5h of incubation and the BCID2 panel (FilmArray) for the identification of microorganisms from positive blood cultures and its importance in the adjustment of antimicrobial therapy was analyzed. Overall identification with BCID2 was 90.4% (142/157) and with Maldi-TOF MS 83.

Article Synopsis
  • Climate change in southern Europe is causing higher temperatures and lower rainfall, impacting resource availability for herbivores and potentially affecting their reproductive performance and sexual selection.
  • A study on Iberian red deer revealed that decreased rainfall correlates with a delayed rutting season and lower male rutting activity, while increasing opportunities for polygyny (one male mating with multiple females).
  • The findings emphasize that environmental changes, particularly reduced rainfall, can influence mating conditions and sexual selection opportunities in wildlife, moderated by factors like population density and sex ratio.

  • Access to high-quality human pancreatic islets is essential for diabetes research, and the IIDP has been a key provider for over 15 years.
  • A study was conducted to determine the best shipping times for islets after isolation, testing various holding periods to optimize islet recovery and minimize loss.
  • Results showed that longer preshipment holding times led to less islet loss during shipping, while islet function remained intact, indicating that giving islets recovery time is beneficial before shipment.

  • Theory suggests that sex-trait expression, like antler size, is influenced by both production costs and social factors such as rivals and mates, although clear evidence is lacking.
  • A study of over 4,000 male Iberian red deer showed that those in environments with low male competition developed smaller antlers, leading to reduced energy demands and less tooth wear, which may contribute to longer lifespans.
  • Experimental results confirmed that males with rival competition grew larger antlers compared to those in female-only environments, providing new evidence of how social competition affects sexual traits and longevity.

The genus Exserohilum consists of dematiaceous or darkly pigmented fungi. Most of the species included in this genus are phytopathogens, saprobes and only three of these species would be pathogenic to humans: Exserohilumrostratum, Exserohilumlongirostratum and Exserohilummcginnisii. Localized and systemic infections have been reported both in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients.

Islet transplantation has been shown to restore normoglycemia clinically. One of the current limitations to the widespread clinical use of islet transplantation is culturing and preserving more than 1 million islet equivalents in preparation for transplant. One possible solution is to bank frozen islets and use them when needed.

  • Major complications of diabetes, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and delayed wound healing, increase the need for early detection of at-risk tissue to improve management and reduce associated healthcare costs.
  • The study compared the wound healing processes in diabetic rats and non-diabetic controls using imaging techniques, revealing that diabetic wounds healed more slowly and showed differing levels of blood components like oxyhaemoglobin and deoxyhaemoglobin.
  • Increased levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in diabetic wounds were linked to heightened inflammation, which correlated with impaired wound healing, highlighting the potential of Spatial Frequency Domain Imaging (SFDI) as a non-invasive tool for assessing wound healing in diabetes.

Cycloferin is an extract of the chemicals from the species, which grows only in small areas in the southwest and southeast of South Africa and has been consumed traditionally as a nourishing tea to treat numerous health issues and illnesses. Previous studies report that some of the active compounds in Cycloferin, such as pinitol (a modified sugar) and mangiferin (a glucoside), may reduce blood sugar levels and therefore may be used as a treatment for diabetes. Mangiferin, in particular, has been shown to stimulate carbohydrate oxidation and alleviate some effects of insulin resistance and hyperglycemia.

Gender-based violence is a widespread and muted problem in public health that particularly affects millions of women worldwide. The situation being relegated to the private sphere is difficult to know the exact number of women who suffer and causes much of the morbidity and the mortality of women. However, at some point in their lives women visit health services and health professionals, especially nursing, is supposed to be the first to detect cases of abuse.

Background: Peru is experiencing a stage of nutritional transition where the principal characteristics are typical of countries undergoing development.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were the following: (a) compare physical growth patterns with an international standard; (b) determine biological age; and (c) analyze the double nutritional burden of adolescents living at a moderate altitude in Peru.

Design: Weight, standing height, and sitting height were measured in 551 adolescents of both sexes (12.

  • Alcohol, cocaine, and cannabis use are linked to aggressive behaviors and traffic accidents, but road rage in those with substance dependence disorders hasn't been thoroughly studied.
  • A study involving 100 substance-dependent patients revealed that 63% experienced road rage in the previous year, with 18% identified as serious perpetrators.
  • The findings suggest a need for greater focus on road rage issues, especially in patients starting treatment for cocaine or heroin addictions.

Coupled plasma filtration absorption (CPFA) can increase blood pressure in septic shock and reduce fever during and after treatment. It is not able to stop the activation of intravascular coagulation and does not reduce the need for dialysis or the overall mortality.

Xochimilco is an area of Mexico City fulfilling important ecological functions. However, the water of the canal network in the lacustrine zone of Xochimilco is supplied by the water treatment plants of the city, implying a risk of accumulated contaminants in the sediments. This study reports the effect of lixiviates obtained from sediments collected in the canals of Xochimilco on the growth of the alga Selenastrum capricornutum and the angiosperm Origanum vulgare.

Introduction: In Mexico, CAPD survival has been analyzed in few studies from the center of the country. However, there are concerns that such results may not represent what occurs in other province centers of our country, particularly in our geographical area.

Aim: To evaluate the patient and technique survival on CAPD of a single center of the west of Mexico, and compare them with other reported series.

A total of 1,356 kidney transplants has been performed in the Hospital de Especialidades del Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente, IMSS, in Guadalajara Mexico, including 935 in the past 8 years. This represents an important increase of this activity in our country. Of the total transplants, 1,218 (90%) were from living donors and only 138 (10%) were from cadaveric donors, a number that we hope to increase.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the risk factors for renal graft loss in Mexico and Latin America, focusing on patients who received their first kidney transplants between 1976 and 1999.
  • A total of 326 patients were analyzed, with key findings indicating that acute rejection episodes and lower HLA haplotype matching significantly predicted graft loss.
  • Overall, while graft survival rates were similar to those in developed countries, the main risks identified for long-term failure were acute rejection and HLA mismatching.
