Opportunistic screening for hepatitis C virus infection in an emergency department in Almeria, Spain.

Objectives: The prevalence of active hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Spain is estimated to be 0.2%, but a large number of persons are unaware of their infection status. Additional approaches to early diagnosis of HCV infection in vulnerable populations with scarce contact with the national health care system are therefore needed.
