Gender differences in the renal changes induced by a prolonged high-fat diet in rats with altered renal development.

The mechanisms involved in renal dysfunction induced by high-fat diet (HFD) in subjects with altered renal development (ARDev) are understudied. The objective of this study is to examine whether there are sex-dependent differences in the mechanisms involved in the hypertension and deterioration of renal function in SD rats with prolonged HFD and ARDev. The role of angiotensin II (Ang II) in the arterial pressure (AP) increments, the renal hemodynamic sensitivity to Ang II, glomerular damage and changes in fat abdominal volume, plasma adipokine levels, renal NADPHp67phox expression, and renal infiltration of immune cells were examined.

Methylobacterium symbioticum sp. nov., a new species isolated from spores of Glomus iranicum var. tenuihypharum.

Strain SB0023/3, isolated from spores of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus iranicum var. tenuihypharum, was analysed to determine whether it represents a new species. It was studied for its applicability in the field of agriculture to reduce the input of nitrogen fertilizers.

Importance of the knowledge of pathological processes for risk-based inspection in pig slaughterhouses (Study of 2002 to 2016).

Objective: The objective of this work was to determine the prevalence of the pathologies that caused the condemnation of pig carcasses in an area of intensive pig farming and Mediterranean climatology and to evaluate their influence in a risk-based inspection procedure for slaughterhouses.

Methods: A retrospective observational investigation was carried out from 2002 to 2016 into the pathological processes that caused the condemnation of pig carcasses in a slaughterhouse from South-eastern Spain. The seasonal effect on the causes of condemnation carcass was reported.

An Atypical Case of Leishmaniasis Associated with Chronic Duodenitis in a Dog.

We describe an atypical case of duodenal leishmaniasis in a boxer dog presenting with chronic diarrhea and poor general condition. Antidiarrheic therapy was previously administered without success and inflammatory bowel disease localized to the small intestine was suspected, given the chronic clinical signs and by ruling out other known causes of gastrointestinal inflammation. Endoscopic biopsy of duodenum showed a moderate increase in lamina propria lymphocytes, plasma cells, and macrophages.

IMAGING DIAGNOSIS-RADIOGRAPHIC, ULTRASONOGRAPHIC, AND COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF A DUODENAL DUPLICATION CYST IN A YOUNG CAT.

A 7-month-old, 2.8 kg, intact female Siamese cat was evaluated for repetitive and intermittent episodes of vomiting and anorexia. Abdominal palpation revealed a round, firm, nonpainful mass in the right cranial abdomen.

Formation of a pseudotumor in total hip arthroplasty using a tribological metal-polyethylene pair.

The aim here was to report a case of a young adult patient who evolved with tumor formation in the left thigh, 14 years after revision surgery on hip arthroplasty. Davies in 2005 made the first description of this disease in patients undergoing metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty. Over the last decade, however, pseudotumors around metal-on-polyethylene surfaces have become more prevalent.

Primary peritonitis by Streptococcus pyogenes. A condition as rare as it is aggressive.

We report the case of a 60-year-old female patient who presented to the emergency room for abdominal pain standing with impaired general status, fever of up to 38.7ºC, and somnolence. Upon arrival the patient had a heart rate of 115 bpm, hypotension (80/40 mmHg),acute respiratory distress, and both hepatic and renal failure.

Relationship between two year PSA nadir and biochemical recurrence in prostate cancer patients treated with iodine-125 brachytherap.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between two year PSA nadir (PSAn) after brachytherapy and biochemical recurrence rates in prostate cancer patients.

Materials And Methods: In the period from January 1998 to August 2007, 120 patients were treated with iodine-125 brachytherapy alone. The results analysis was based on the definition of biochemical recurrence according to the Phoenix Consensus.

Cystitis glandularis in a cat.

An 8-year-old intact male Persian cat was presented for investigation of chronic haematuria. The cat had episodes of haematuria on several occasions that were non-responsive to antimicrobial therapy. Abdominal ultrasound examination revealed dilation of the renal pelvis and ureters of both kidneys.

Immunohistochemical detection of extrinsic and intrinsic mediators of apoptosis in porcine paraffin-embedded tissues.

Apoptosis is a strictly regulated mechanism of cell death that involves a complex network of biochemical pathways. Whether a cell undergoes apoptosis or not depends on a delicate balance of anti- and pro-apoptotic stimuli. This phenomenon can be induced by two different pathways: intrinsic and extrinsic pathways.

Localized prostate cancer with intermediate- or high-risk features treated with combined external beam radiotherapy and iodine-125 seed brachytherapy.

Objective: The aim of the study is to compare the results of the combined external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) with iodine-125 seed brachytherapy vs. brachytherapy alone for prostate cancer treatment in patients with intermediate and high risk of disease recurrence.

Methods And Materials: Ninety-six patients were treated from January 1998 to December 2006.

Femoral head-neck junction deformity is related to osteoarthritis of the hip.

Background: Primary or idiopathic osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip has increasingly been attributed to the presence of presumably minor femoral or acetabular deformities that are not routinely identified. The alpha angle reflects one such deformity of the femoral neck and reflects a risk for femoroacetabular impingement, which in turn reportedly is associated with OA. If impingement is in fact associated with OA, then one might expect the mean alpha angle to be greater in patients with presumed idiopathic hip OA.

Radioactive seed migration after prostate brachytherapy with iodine-125 using loose seeds versus stranded seeds.

Objectives: To assess the incidence and clinical parameters that could influence migration of seeds in localized prostate cancer patients treated by stranded versus loose sources by Iodine-125 brachytherapy.

Materials And Methods: 100 patients were treated from January/1998 until December/2006. Age, PSA, clinical stage, Gleason, prostate volume, number of seeds, activity of radioactive seeds, and dosimetric parameters, such as V100, V150 and D90 were evaluated.

Changes in lymphocyte subsets and cytokines during European porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome: increased expression of IL-12 and IL-10 and proliferation of CD4(-)CD8(high).

The changes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) have been studied in several reports in an attempt to determine the immune response against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection. However, how these changes are evoked after PRRSV infection has not yet been clarified. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes seen in lymphocyte subsets and immunomodulatory cytokine expression in pigs after an acute experimental infection with a European PRRSV field isolate.

Occipitoatlantoaxial malformation in an adult goat.

An occipitoatlantoaxial malformation was diagnosed in a 1-year-old Murciano-Granadina goat. At clinical examination, the head and cranial part of the neck were deviated to the right. Clinical signs of spinal cord or brain disease were not observed.

Morbillivirus and pilot whale deaths, Mediterranean Sea.

An outbreak of a lethal morbillivirus infection of long-finned pilot whales occurred in the Mediterranean Sea from the end of October 2006 through April 2007. Sequence analysis of a 426-bp conserved fragment of the morbillivirus phosphoprotein gene indicates that the virus is more closely related to dolphin morbillivirus than to pilot whale morbillivirus.

The seven-year preliminary results of brachytherapy with Iodine-125 seeds for localized prostate cancer treated at a Brazilian single-center.

Objective: To report the seven-year preliminary results of a single-center on brachytherapy with Iodine-125 seeds, used in combination with external beam radiotherapy in selected patients with localized prostate cancer (T1-T2).

Materials And Methods: All 105 patients treated by brachytherapy with Iodine-125 seeds, from January/1998 to December/2004, were retrospectively analyzed. The prescribed dose was 144 Gy at the periphery of the prostate for isolated brachytherapy, and 110 Gy for the combination with external beam radiotherapy.

Relationship between serum acute phase protein concentrations and lesions in finishing pigs.

To establish the relationship between serum levels of three acute phase proteins, haptoglobin (Hp), C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA), and the occurrence and severity of lesions at slaughter, a study was carried out using 70 fattening pigs from a finishing unit. Pigs were divided into three groups: Group 1 (25 pigs with clinical signs of disease), Group 2 (25 apparently healthy pigs with lesions at slaughter) and Group 3 (20 apparently healthy pigs with no lesions at slaughter). Serum levels of CRP, SAA and Hp were significantly higher in pigs with clinical signs of disease than in apparently healthy animals.

Dismembered laparoscopic pyeloplasty with antegrade placement of ureteral stent: simplification of the technique.

Laparoscopic pyeloplasty is an effective treatment option for ureteropelvic junction obstruction, with success rates superior to other minimally invasive approaches. We describe our technique of laparoscopic pyeloplasty with antegrade placement of ureteral stent with a laparoscopic-guided abdominal puncture. This technique decreases the use of fluoroscopy and also facilitates renal pelvis dissection and ureteropelvic anastomosis.
