Validation of F-FDG PET/MRI and diffusion-weighted MRI for estimating the extent of peritoneal carcinomatosis in ovarian and endometrial cancer -a pilot study.

Background: The extent of peritoneal carcinomatosis is difficult to estimate preoperatively, but a valid measure would be important in identifying operable patients. The present study set out to validate the usefulness of integrated F-FDG PET/MRI, in comparison with diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI), for estimation of the extent of peritoneal carcinomatosis in patients with gynaecological cancer.

Methods: Whole-body PET/MRI was performed on 34 patients with presumed carcinomatosis of gynaecological origin, all scheduled for surgery.

Pulmonary influences on early post-operative recovery in patients after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy treatment: a retrospective study.

Background: The combination of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a curative treatment option for peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC). There have been few studies on the pulmonary adverse events (AEs) affecting patient recovery after this treatment, thus this study investigated these factors.

Methods: Between January 2005 and December 2006, clinical data on all pulmonary AEs and the recovery progress were reviewed for 76 patients with after CRS and HIPEC.

MR spectroscopy of the human prostate using surface coil at 3 T: metabolite ratios, age-dependent effects, and diagnostic possibilities.

Purpose: To measure prostate spectra of healthy volunteers using a surface coil, to demonstrate age-dependent effects, and to investigate diagnostic possibilities for prostate cancer detection.

Materials And Methods: Single-voxel and 2D magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) spectra of 51 healthy volunteers with biopsy-proven prostate carcinoma of 20 patients for comparison were measured and processed using the LCModel. The mean normalized spectra and mean metabolite-to-citrate intensity ratios were computed.

Clinical Phase I study with an Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 receptor inhibitor: experiences in patients with squamous non-small cell lung carcinoma.

Background: Inhibition of the Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) has resulted in extensive anti-tumor effects. Picropdophyllin (PPP, AXL1717) is a small-molecule inhibitor of the IGF-1R without inhibition of closely related receptors including the insulin receptor and has shown extensive effects against a wide range of tumors in animals. PPP is currently tested as an orally administrated single agent treatment in an open-label combined Phase I/II clinical study in advanced cancer patients with solid tumors which progress in spite of several lines of treatment.

Two-dimensional spectroscopic imaging for pretreatment evaluation of prostate cancer: comparison with the step-section histology after radical prostatectomy.

Purpose: To minimize user and vendor dependence of the spectrum processing of prostate spectra, to measure the ratio of choline (Cho) plus creatine (Cr) to citrate (Cit) in the prostate tissue of normal volunteers and cancer patients, and to compare the results with pathologic findings after radical prostatectomy.

Materials And Methods: Four healthy volunteers and 13 patients with prostate cancer were measured. Measurements were performed using two-dimensional magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) and endorectal coil.

Distractive flexion injuries of the subaxial cervical spine treated with anterior plate alone.

The clinical and radiographic effect of anterior plate fixation alone was evaluated in 36 consecutive patients with distractive flexion (DF) injuries in the lower cervical spine. Mean follow-up time was 15 months. The aim of the present study was to determine whether anterior plate fixation alone provides sufficient stability when treating DF injuries in the cervical spine.

Peritoneal metastases: detection with spiral CT in patients with ovarian cancer.

Purpose: To determine the accuracy of spiral computed tomography (CT) in the depiction of peritoneal metastases by using surgical findings in patients with ovarian cancer as the standard of reference.

Materials And Methods: Three independent readers reviewed the preoperative CT scans obtained in 64 patients who underwent primary surgery for ovarian cancer. Readers rated the likelihood of peritoneal metastases on a five-point scale and recorded the presence or absence of ascites, parietal peritoneal thickening or enhancement, and small-bowel wall thickening or distortion.
