Aedes albopictus mosquitoes face numerous anthropic stressors in urban areas. These xenobiotics not only impact mosquito physiology but also shape the composition of their microbiota, which play important roles in host physiological traits. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants known to alter mosquito metabolism, but no studies have yet investigated their impact on microbiota.

The Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus is well adapted to urban environments and takes advantage of the artificial containers that proliferate in anthropized landscapes. Little is known about the physicochemical, pollutant, and microbiota compositions of Ae. albopictus-colonized aquatic habitats and whether these properties differ with noncolonized habitats.

Raw milk cheeses harbor complex microbial communities. Some of these microorganisms are technologically essential, but undesirable microorganisms can also be present. While most of the microbial dynamics and cross-talking studies involving interaction between food-derived bacteria have been carried out on agar plates in laboratory-controlled conditions, the present study evaluated the modulation of the resident microbiota and the changes of metabolite production directly in ripening raw milk cheese inoculated with strains.

Antibiotic treatment to prevent pediatric acute otitis media infectious complications: A meta-analysis.

Background: Most US children with acute otitis media [AOM] receive prompt antibiotic treatment, though guidelines encourage watchful waiting. Previous systematic reviews of antibiotics versus watchful waiting have focused on symptom resolution and RCTs, limiting the assessment of serious, rare complications. We sought to evaluate these complications by including observational studies.

Insects represent a sustainable and protein-rich food source. This new supply chain requires the study and monitoring of pathogens' presence and impact, as for other farmed animals. Among pathogens, Salmonella is of interest due to the well-established possibility for insects to harbor it.

Bland and Altman agreement method: to plot differences against means or differences against standard? An endless tale?

Objectives: In the Bland and Altman analysis of agreement studies, there is some controversy whether "to plot the differences between the Standard/actual measurement method and the test/new measurement method against their mean" or "to plot the differences against the standard method". Of course, this is not just a "graphic dispute" as a regression model is inherent in the graphical choice to test the proportional and systematic biases.

Methods: We revised two relevant papers claiming to plot the differences against the standard and outlined their pitfalls taking into account the underlying statistical methodology.

The consumption of insects as food and feed has been recently suggested as a possible alternative to the rising global food need, thus it is crucial to monitor any potential food safety hazards in the insect supply chain. The aims of this systematic review were to collect, select, and evaluate studies investigating the persistence of Salmonella in insects. We searched PUBMED, EMBASE, WEB of Science Core Collection, and Food Science and Technology Abstracts.

Objective: Boric acid (BA) powder is commonly used to treat otologic conditions, such as mastoid bowl inflammation and chronic otitis externa. Exposure to 50 mg per day is thought to cause systemic toxicity in humans. Inflamed skin and mucosal surfaces readily absorb BA.

Tetrodotoxin in bivalve mollusks: An integrated study towards the comprehension of the influencing factors of a newly native phenomenon.

Tetrodotoxins (TTXs) are potent neurotoxins named after the Tetraodontidae fish family. The ingestion of TTX-contaminated flesh can cause neurotoxic symptoms and can lead to death. In 2017 symptoms the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recognized the threat to food safety resulting from TTX exposure via food consumption and, thus, proposed a safety limit of 44 μg/kg of TTX in marine gastropods and bivalves.

Hypothesis: Tetracyclines are less cytotoxic to tympanic membrane (TM) fibroblasts than quinolones.

Background: Use of quinolone ear drops after tympanostomy tube placement and for acute otitis externa has been linked to an increased risk of TM perforation. This has been verified in animal models.

Social Support, Identity Affirmation, and Psychological Well-Being: A Developmental and Intersectional Comparison between Italian Cisgender and Non-Binary People with Bisexual Orientation.

Incorporating the perspectives of positive psychology, intersectionality, and life course into minority stress theory, this study aimed to examine the relationships between social support, identity affirmation, and psychological well-being among 483 Italian individuals with bisexual orientation, accounting for differences in gender identity (cisgender vs. non-binary) and age groups (young, early, and middle adult). A mediation model was tested in which identity affirmation served as a presumed mediator between social support and psychological well-being.

Bombyx mori from a food safety perspective: A systematic review.

Bombyx mori (BM) is an economically important insect for silk production, and it is also farmed and used as food in different countries around the world. The present systematic review aims to assess the suitability of BM as an edible insect, retrieving data from scientific papers reporting microbiological, chemical, and allergenic hazards of silkworm consumed as either whole insects or insect derivatives. We considered all studies published in peer-reviewed journals in English, French, and Spanish languages.

Quinolone Ear Drops and Achilles Tendon Rupture.

Background: Delayed eardrum healing has been observed in the ear opposite to the ear treated with otic quinolones (OQ) in rats. Case reports describe tendinopathies after OQ treatment, suggesting adverse systemic effects.

Methods: We studied patients aged 19 to 64 years with diagnosis of otitis externa or media in private insurance between 2005 and 2015.

As insects have started to enter the eating habits of Western countries, an increasing amount of literature regarding the mulberry silkworm () prospective application as food has been published. Despite this growing interest, there is currently no systematic review of silkworm nutritional composition available. In this paper, we performed a systematic review of the recent available literature on the nutrient composition of mulberry silkworm pupae.

Reciprocal interactions between anthropogenic stressors and insect microbiota.

Insects play many important roles in nature due to their diversity, ecological role, and impact on agriculture or human health. They are directly influenced by environmental changes and in particular anthropic activities that constitute an important driver of change in the environmental characteristics. Insects face numerous anthropogenic stressors and have evolved various detoxication mechanisms to survive and/or resist to these compounds.

Watchful Waiting for Acute Otitis Media.

Background And Objectives: Updated guidelines continue to support watchful waiting as an option for uncomplicated acute otitis media (AOM) and provide explicit diagnostic criteria. To determine treatment prevalence and associated determinants of watchful waiting for AOM in commercially insured pediatric patients.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study using IBM Marketscan Commercial Claims Databases (2005 to 2019) of patients 1 to 12 years old with AOM, without otitis-related complications within 6 months prior, with no tympanostomy tubes, and no other infections around index diagnosis of AOM.

A Nutritional Approach for the Management of Chemotherapy-Induced Diarrhea in Patients with Colorectal Cancer.

This study aimed to determine if dietary modifications using a nutritional regimen could prevent or reduce the incidence of cancer therapy-induced diarrhea in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer and to evaluate the relationship of Vitamin D blood levels with diarrhea severity. Patients with metastatic colorectal cancer were enrolled. A Mediterranean diet, containing some special limitations aiming to reduce the risk of diarrhea, was administered before and during the entire chemotherapy program.

Optimization of Antibiotic Selection in the Emergency Department for Adult Skin and Soft Tissue Infections.

Emergency department (ED) order sets that include skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) stratification and antimicrobial selection criteria may improve clinical outcomes and appropriateness of initial antibiotic selection. The purpose of this study was to optimize and evaluate antimicrobial prescribing for SSTI in the ED by implementing an institution specific Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) guideline directed computerized provider order entry (CPOE) order set. The primary outcome was the rate of appropriate antibiotic prescribing for SSTI in the ED before and after order set revision.
