Our aim was to evaluate the possible long-term cerebral deposition of amyloid-β in patients with PD treated with subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) and its possible influence on axial and cognitive variables. Consecutive PD patients treated with bilateral STN-DBS with a long-term follow-up were included. The amyloid-β deposition was evaluated postoperatively through an 18F-flutemetamol positron emission tomography (PET) study.

Article Synopsis
  • Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease classified into different phenotypes, mainly PSP with Richardson's syndrome (PSP-RS) and PSP with predominant parkinsonism (PSP-P), based on clinical features.
  • The study aimed to analyze how speech disorders, particularly dysarthria, manifest differently in PSP-RS and PSP-P patients, with both groups showing similar demographics and disease severity.
  • Results indicated no significant differences in speech profiles between the two subtypes at mid-stage disease, though PSP-RS patients exhibited greater impairment in oculomotor function.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic and debilitating inflammatory skin disease that often exhibits heterogeneity in its clinical presentation, especially in the context of its rare syndromic forms. The pathogenesis of HS results from a complex interplay of genetic predisposition, innate and adaptive immunity dysregulation, smoking, obesity and environmental factors. In the early phase of the disease, the innate immune system is hyperactivated, contributing to tissue damage and triggering the activation and amplification of the adaptive immune response, which plays a pivotal role in the chronic stages of the disease.

Hypogea are natural or artificial spaces located underground often of great interest from an anthropological, archeological, religious, artistic, or historic point of view. Due to their features, these environments usually present conservative problems and biological colonization could be considered as one of the main threats. The present three-year study was carried out by specialists of the Central Institute for Restoration of Rome (ICR) in the hypogeous site preserved in the Roman Archeological Museum of Positano (Positano MAR) and focused on characterizing biological alterations present on the mural paintings; setting up efficient strategies and protocols for biodeterioration control; and monitoring the efficacy of direct and indirect interventions.

Pressure ulcers (PUs) are a debilitating and often painful condition. They are localized lesions on the skin and/or underlying tissues and are common in the elderly, people with mobility difficulties, diabetics, and vascular disease or malnutrition, as well as in those requiring intensive or palliative care. The prevention and treatment of PUs involve strategies to optimize hydration, circulation, and nutrition.

Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a lipid carrier in both the peripheral and the central nervous systems (CNSs). Lipid-loaded ApoE lipoprotein particles bind to several cell surface receptors to support membrane homeostasis and brain injury repair. In the brain, ApoE is produced predominantly by astrocytes, but it is also abundantly expressed in most neurons of the CNS.

Emotion recognition and the resulting responses are important for survival and social functioning. However, how socially derived information is processed for reliable emotion recognition is incompletely understood. Here, we reveal an evolutionarily conserved long-range inhibitory/excitatory brain network mediating these socio-cognitive processes.

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a debilitating chronic skin disease; its therapeutic approach often requires combined medical and surgical treatment.

Methods: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of the surgical approach combined with different pharmacological treatments, evaluating the proportion of patients achieving the hidradenitis suppurativa clinical response (HiSCR), along with the incidence of postoperative complications, and local recurrence. A retrospective study of HS patients (Hurley I-III) presenting at least one skin lesion requiring surgery was performed.

Background: Hemiballism (HB) and hemichorea (HC) are the most frequent secondary movement disorders, usually caused by cerebrovascular diseases. In only a minority of cases, these involuntary movements are not self-limited, and they may severely compromise patients' quality of life, so that symptomatic treatments are required. Typical and atypical neuroleptics as well as tetrabenazine are considered therapies of choice.

The immunopathogenesis of HS is partially understood and exhibits features of an autoinflammatory disease; it is associated with the potential involvement of B cells and the contribution of Th1 or Th17 cell subsets. Recently, the pathogenic role of both innate immunity and IL-1 family cytokines in HS has been deeply investigated. Several agents targeting the IL-1 family pathway at different levels are currently available and under investigation for the treatment of HS.
