Background: For patients suffering of recurrent breast cancer within the irradiated breast, generally mastectomy is recommended. The normal tissue tolerance does not permit a second full-dose course of radiotherapy to the entire breast after a second breast-conserving surgery (BCS). A novel option is to treat these patients with partial breast irradiation (PBI).

Material And Methods: Eighty-six consecutive patients underwent radiotherapy between January 2000 and December 2003: 52 patients received radiotherapy alone, 17 patients radiochemotherapy with low-dose temozolomide (20 mg/m(2)) + cyclooxygenase-2-inhibitors (200 mg), 6 patients radiochemotherapy with high-dose temozolomide (50 mg/m2). Eleven patients, with unfavorable prognostic factors, were treated with imatinib and 55/2.
Purpose: Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) as a boost for breast cancer delivers a high single dose of radiation to a late-reacting tissue; therefore late toxicity is of particular interest, and long-term follow-up is warranted. To date there are only limited data available on breast cancer patients treated with IORT using low energy X-rays. We analyzed toxicity and cosmesis after IORT as a boost with a minimum follow-up of 18 months.

Immediately after tumor resection the tumor bed can be treated with low-distance X-rays by a single high dose. Whereas often a geographic miss in covering the boost target occurs with external beam boost radiotherapy (EBRT), the purpose of IORT is to cover the tumor bed safely.

Methods And Materials: A relatively large series of 84 consecutive patients treated at our Institution over a 30-year period (1970-2000) was retrospectively analyzed. Sixteen more patients treated in the same period were affected by a relapse of disease at presentation and were therefore excluded from the analysis.
