Primary mucinous ovarian carcinomas (MOC) are notoriously difficult to distinguish from mucinous carcinomas metastatic to the ovary (mMC). Studies performed on small cohorts reported algorithms based on tumor size and laterality to aid in distinguishing MOC from mMC. We evaluated and improved these by performing a large-scale, nationwide search in the Dutch Pathology Registry.

Article Synopsis
  • MPA is an immunosuppressive drug used to prevent kidney transplant rejection, with significant variability in how children respond to the medication.
  • The study focused on pediatric renal transplant patients from 1998 to 2014, categorizing them into two groups based on drug exposure measured as AUC (Area Under the Curve).
  • Factors influencing MPA exposure included time since transplantation and serum creatinine levels, indicating that personalized dosing through more proactive therapeutic drug monitoring could enhance treatment effectiveness.

Nodal marginal zone lymphoma (NMZL) is a rare type of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This study assessed the clinical features of 56 patients with NMZL in comparison to 46 patients with follicular lymphoma (FL). Patients with NMZL and FL had a largely similar clinical presentation, but patients with FL had a higher disease stage at presentation, more frequent abdominal lymphadenopathy and bone marrow involvement, and showed more common transformation into diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) during the course of disease.

  • Steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) is a serious issue post-stem cell transplantation, leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality.
  • A study evaluated combination therapy with inolimomab and etanercept in 21 patients with severe aGVHD, finding a 48% overall response rate at day 28, but nearly all patients eventually died (90%) mainly due to refractory aGVHD and infections.
  • This treatment approach did not significantly improve the poor survival rates, with only 29% and 10% of patients surviving at 6 months and 2 years, respectively.

To explore the influence of decreasing flow rate on cerebral hemodynamics during veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (va-ECMO), six normoxemic and six hypoxemic piglets were put on va-ECMO. The ECMO flow rate was decreased from the maximal achievable level to 50 mL min1 with steps of 50 mL min1 every 2 minutes. Changes in mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), left common carotid artery blood flow (Qcar), and other physiologic variables were continuously measured.

Purpose: To prospectively determine the screening mammography outcome at blinded and non-blinded double reading in a biennial population based screening programme in the south of the Netherlands.

Methods: We included a consecutive series of 87,487 digital screening mammograms, obtained between July 2009 and July 2011. Screening mammograms were double read in either a blinded (2nd reader was not informed about the 1st reader's decision) or non-blinded fashion (2nd reader was informed about the 1st reader's decision).

Background: There is no consensus regarding resection of the primary tumour with few or absent symptoms in patients with synchronous unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). A potential benefit of resection of the primary tumour is to prevent complications of the primary tumour in later stages of the disease. We here propose a randomized trial in order to demonstrate that resection of the primary tumour improves overall survival.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the accuracy of dental implant placement in patients with severe maxilla bone loss using advanced computer planning and surgical templates.
  • A total of 150 implants were placed in 25 patients, revealing average deviations of about 1.5 mm in depth and 2.5° in angulation, with 53% being placed too superficially compared to initial plans.
  • The findings highlight that while computer-aided planning can be beneficial, surgeons must remain cautious of potential deviations during the procedure.

Background: Current practice for diagnosis of Q fever, caused by the intracellular pathogen Coxiella burnetii, relies mainly on serology and, in prevaccination assessment, on skin tests (STs), which both have drawbacks. In this study, C. burnetii-specific interferon γ (IFN-γ) production was used as a new diagnostic tool for previous Q fever, circumventing most of these drawbacks.

Negative costimulation on T cells is exploited by both prostate cancer and melanoma to evade antitumor immunity. Blocking such mechanisms restores antitumor immunity as was demonstrated by the improved survival of patients with metastatic melanoma after treatment with an antibody blocking the CTLA-4 inhibitory receptor (ipilimumab). Enhanced expression of another inhibitory immunoreceptor, programmed death-1 (PD-1), and its ligand, PD-L1, was found to correlate with a poor prognosis in prostate cancer and melanoma.
