Background: Incidental lung cancer, in the field of lung transplantation (LTx), is more often related to malignancies diagnosed in explants or transplanted organs. Little is known about cancer diagnosed during the medical evaluation of potential LTx candidates. What are the clinical, and prognostic differences between lung cancers diagnosed before or after transplantation in LTx candidates?

Methods: We performed a retrospective, observational, single-center study to describe the characteristics of lung malignancies first discovered during the pre-transplant assessment and then identified in lung explants, over the same period.

Dense and aligned Collagen I fibers are associated with collective cancer invasion led by protrusive tumor cells, leader cells. In some breast tumors, a population of cancer cells (basal-like cells) maintain several epithelial characteristics and express the myoepithelial/basal cell marker Keratin 14 (K14). Emergence of leader cells and K14 expression are regarded as interconnected events triggered by Collagen I, however the underlying mechanisms remain unknown.

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is widely recognized as a cause of acute respiratory failure in infants and immunocompromised patients. However, RSV can also contribute to acute respiratory failure in adults, particularly among the elderly population. The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics and outcomes of immunocompetent adults hospitalized for RSV infection.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aims to develop a deep learning method for detecting pulmonary embolism (PE) and calculating its severity using specific metrics on 3D computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) images with few annotations.
  • The approach includes a series of steps: identifying blood clots, classifying PE presence, and estimating both the Qanadli score and right-to-left ventricle diameter (RV/LV) ratio, utilizing data from a large set of patient examinations.
  • Results showed promising accuracy for PE classification with an area under the curve (AUC) of about 0.87, and solid regression outcomes for estimating severity scores, indicating potential use of AI tools in clinical settings, though further research is needed. *

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is essential for cell support during homeostasis and plays a critical role in cancer. Although research often concentrates on the tumor's cellular aspect, attention is growing for the importance of the cancer-associated ECM. Biochemical and physical ECM signals affect tumor formation, invasion, metastasis, and therapy resistance.

Management of hemoptysis begins with an angio-CT to identify the location, the bleeding vessel, mapping of systemic arteries and the cause of the hemoptysis. Endovascular treatment is the first-line therapy, in 90% of cases by embolization of the systemic arteries and in 10% of cases by occlusion of the pulmonary arteries.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (eFAST) for patients with stab wounds to the chest or abdomen, comparing it to CT scans.
  • Out of 200 patients, eFAST was particularly valuable in identifying urgent conditions like cardiac tamponade and haemothorax, with high sensitivity and specificity for these injuries.
  • However, eFAST showed lower sensitivity for diagnosing pneumothorax and haemoperitoneum, indicating a need for further research across multiple centers to validate these findings.

Purpose: In 2022, the French Society of Radiology together with the French Society of Thoracic Imaging and CentraleSupelec organized their 13th data challenge. The aim was to aid in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, by identifying the presence of pulmonary embolism and by estimating the ratio between right and left ventricular (RV/LV) diameters, and an arterial obstruction index (Qanadli's score) using artificial intelligence.

Materials And Methods: The data challenge was composed of three tasks: the detection of pulmonary embolism, the RV/LV diameter ratio, and Qanadli's score.

Article Synopsis
  • * The majority of the patients had severe COVID-19, with 90% showing abnormal ASL perfusion, particularly hypoperfusion in the temporal poles and frontal lobes, even if traditional MRI scans appeared normal.
  • * The findings highlight that over 80% of these patients exhibited significant brain perfusion deficits, suggesting that neurological complications in COVID-19 can occur independently of visible lesions on standard MRI scans.

Cancer-derived organoids and three-dimensional (3D) extracellular matrix (ECM) are taking center stage as in vitro models to study neoplastic cell behavior, since they recapitulate the heterogeneous cellular composition of tumors and their extracellular environment. In combination with imaging and molecular/biochemical techniques, 3D organoid models have contributed substantially to our knowledge about the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate the growth of tumors and invasion into the surrounding tissue. We here outline a set of protocols that describe culturing of cancer-derived organoids in 3D matrices and various strategies that allow modeling of tumor growth, tumor cell penetration into basement membranes, and invasion into Collagen I-rich ECM.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been a major advance in treating non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Programmed cell death protein-1/programmed death-ligand 1 blockade enhances immune function, mediating anti-tumor activity, yet causing immune-related adverse events (irAEs). We investigated the prognostic role of Grade 3−4 irAEs on overall survival (OS).

Introduction: The selection of patients for lung transplantation is difficult. An aspect of the patient's general condition and frailty can be assessed by measuring the surface area of certain muscles on CT. Indeed, sarcopenia, assessed by measuring the area of psoas muscles on scannographic sections has already been shown to be associated with poor outcomes in lung transplant and other major surgeries and could thus be helpful to evaluate candidates to lung transplant.

The tumor micro-environment often contains stiff and irregular-bundled collagen fibers that are used by tumor cells to disseminate. It is still unclear how and to what extent, extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness versus ECM bundle size and alignment dictate cancer cell invasion. Here, we have uncoupled Collagen-I bundling from stiffness by introducing inter-collagen crosslinks, combined with temperature induced aggregation of collagen bundling.
