Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that causes degeneration of motor neurons (MNs) and paralysis. ALS can be caused by mutations in the gene that encodes copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1). Orbitofacial NFs, in particular, may cause progressive, disfiguring tumors of the lid, brow, temple, face, and orbit, and clinical evidence suggests that they may have increased local aggressiveness compared to NFs developing at other sites.
