Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are one of the novel treatment strategies for malignancies, and their wide use has led to the emergence of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Most of them have been reported in patients taking cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated protein 4 inhibitors and are rarely reported among those taking programmed cell death-ligand protein 1 inhibitors. Infection is a primary cause of DKA and can lead to elevated levels of procalcitonin (PCT), which is a biomarker used to differentiate bacterial infections from non-infectious inflammation. However, some cases of DKA have shown increased PCT levels even in the absence of bacterial infection, and the underlying mechanism of this observation is not fully understood.

Implementing these strategies avoids adverse effects associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and minimizes the potential for opioid use. This review focuses exclusively on human trials studying the effects of gut microbiome alterations to address pain and inflammatory markers in common orthopedic conditions: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fractures/osteoporosis, and bone pain associated with chemotherapy.
