Here we show that ice-rich, Yedoma permafrost deposits, comprising a disproportionately large fraction of pan-arctic soil carbon, present an alternate trajectory. Field and laboratory observations indicate that talik (perennially thawed soils in permafrost) development in unsaturated Yedoma uplands leads to unexpectedly large methane emissions (35-78 mg m d summer, 150-180 mg m d winter).

Background: The CEA/PCI ratio, which evaluates tumour marker and burden, has been demonstrated as a prognosticator for patients with colorectal cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis. The aim of this study was to compare the CEA/PCI ratio with the Modified Colorectal Peritoneal Score (mCOREP) for overall survival (OS) and recurrence free survival (RFS). There is no literature currently comparing both markers for RFS.

Purpose: To assess the likely pathogenic/pathogenic (LP/P) variants rates in Mendelian dementia genes and the moderate-to-strong risk factors rates in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD).

Methods: We included 700 patients in a prospective study and performed exome sequencing. A panel of 28 Mendelian and 6 risk-factor genes was interpreted and returned to patients.

Colo-uterine fistulas are rarely reported in the literature, and its presentation in the presence of a tubo-ovarian abscess secondary to chronic sigmoid diverticulitis is currently not reported. Preoperative iron infusion does not reduce the requirement for blood transfusion in colorectal cancer surgery.

Background: Allogeneic blood transfusions (BT) for patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery have demonstrated to increase postoperative morbidity and mortality. It has been suggested that the utilization of preoperative iron infusions may reduce the requirement for allogeneic BT in these patients. The aim of this project is to ascertain whether the preoperative use of intravenous iron is significantly associated with a reduction in perioperative blood transfusion requirement.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) binding antibody (Ab) levels following vaccination or natural infection could be used as a surrogate for immune protection if results of serological assays were standardized to yield quantitative results using an international standard. Using a bead-based serological assay (Luminex xMAP), anti-receptor binding domain (anti-RBD) Ab levels were determined for 1,450 participants enrolled in the Los Angeles Pandemic Surveillance Cohort (LAPSC) study. For 123 participants, SARS-CoV-2 binding antibody unit (BAU) levels were also quantified using WHO standards and then compared to the semiquantitative results.

However, the reproducibility of face-to-face (F2F) versus remote videoconference-based cognitive testing remains to be established. We assessed the reliability and agreement between F2F and remote administrations of the Abbreviated Mental Test (AMT), modified version of the Chinese Mini-Mental State Examination (mCMMSE), and Chinese Frontal Assessment Battery (CFAB) in older adults attending a memory clinic.

Background: Malnutrition continues to be associated with outcomes in hospitalized patients.

Methods: An updated review of national data in patients with a coded diagnosis of malnutrition (CDM) and the use of nutrition support (enteral nutrition [EN] and parenteral nutrition [PN]) was conducted using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project and Medicare Claims data.

Results: Results demonstrated a growing trend in CDM accompanied by continued low utilization of PN and EN.

Background: The mortality of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) has been associated with a pulmonary inflammatory response resulting in hypoxemia and rapid clinical decline. PREVENT is an ongoing prospective multicenter Phase II randomized controlled trial where patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia are randomized to low dose radiation therapy (RT) versus control (clinicaltrials.gov, NCT04466683).

Malnutrition diagnoses and associated outcomes in hospitalized patients: United States, 2018.

In the US, malnutrition is prevalent among hospitalized patients and is associated with higher morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs when compared with those without malnutrition. Over time, national data have indicated the rate of coded malnutrition diagnoses among hospital discharges rising over time, and more current data on demographic and clinical characteristics of these patients are needed. Data on malnutrition discharges from the 2018 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP)-the most recent nationally representative data-were examined and compared with earlier HCUP findings.

The role of perceived legitimacy in understanding traffic rule compliance: A scoping review.

Background: Perceived legitimacy associated with rules and authorities is an important element for understanding and encouraging compliance with rules in the field of road safety, often more so than with a deterrence approach. Despite a growing interest in legitimacy in recent decades and in the psychological field in particular, its definitions and measurements appear to be heterogeneous, subject to debate and in need of a common theoretical framework. Therefore, one can expect these limitations to also concern the definitions and measurements of legitimacy in the field of road safety.

Making Historicity: Paleontology and the Proximity of the Past in Germany, 1775-1825.

This article analyzes the making of a novel consciousness of historicity in Germany around 1800, one that regarded mountains as vaults of a shared and palpable past. Revisiting a paleontological debate about the origin of large mammal bones found in caves, it reads the science of Johann Christian Rosenmüller (1771-1820) as a social and political accomplishment. By attributing the fossils to an indigenous "cave bear," and communicating an elite scientific debate to a lay audience, Rosenmüller presented an account of Germany's primordial past that fed seamlessly into its present, nurturing an idea of nationhood grounded in the (sub)soil.
