Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are a new class of materials with highly tunable bandgap transition type, bandgap energy and band alignment. Herein, we have designed a novel 2D g-GaN/ScCO heterostructure as a potential solar-driven photocatalyst for the water splitting process and investigate its catalytic stability, interfacial interactions, and optical and electronic properties, as well as the effects of applying an electric field and biaxial strain using first-principles calculation. The calculated lattice mismatch and binding energy showed that g-GaN and ScCO are in contact and may form a stable vdW heterostructure.

Cosmetologists may be potentially exposed to high levels of formaldehyde as a result of their exposure to formaldehyde released from the various cosmetic products used in the beauty salons. In order to assess the exposure of cosmetologists to formaldehyde, the indoor air in sixty beauty salons across the ten submetros in Kumasi were sampled to determine the formaldehyde levels and the associated noncarcinogenic human health risks. Sampling was done using System Service Innovation Incorporation air sampler model 1000, and the MBTH spectrophotometric method was used for analysis.

This study evaluates the exposure of the Ghanaian population of the Kumasi Metropolis of Ghana to formaldehyde through the consumption of fish using 3-Methyl-2-Benzothiazoline Hydrazone method, with trichloroacetic acid as an extracting agent. Geogenic and anthropogenic activities introduce certain metals into the environment which tend to deteriorate the quality of both surface and groundwater in the Bosomtwe Crater Lake and its surroundings. In this study spatio-temporal variations in concentrations and risk assessment of selected trace metals (As, Fe, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd and Ni) were investigated during the wet and dry seasons for surface and groundwater in selected human settlements around the lake. The levels of As, Cd and Ni were generally small and were below the detection limit of the instrument.

Three analytical methods using automatic mercury analyzer (AMA), direct mercury analyzer (DMA) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were applied to determine mercury in fish and sediment samples from the Volta Lake in Ghana with the aim of comparing their accuracy, precision, and limit of quantifications. There was statistically no significant difference (p < 0.05) between the concentrations recorded by the methods.

The mechanistic pathways for the formation of zinc selenide, zinc sulphide and ternary zinc selenide sulphide in the gas phase decomposition of Zn[(C6H5)2PSSe]2 single-source precursor has been explored on the singlet and doublet potential energy surfaces using density functional theory method in order to understand the thermodynamic and kinetic properties. The optimized geometries and the predicted energies were obtained using the M06 functional and a combination of the basis sets LACVP* for Zn and 6-31(d) for light atoms. The rate constants of each elementary reaction have been calculated using the transition state theory.
