The short and long statistical correlations are essential in the genomic sequence. Such correlations are long-range for introns, whereas, for exons, these are short. In this study, we employed superstatistics to investigate correlations and fluctuations in the distribution of nucleotide sequence lengths of the family.

Background: The minimum weight for enterostomy closure (EC) in infants remains debated with the current acceptable cut-off of >2 kg. As enterostomy-related complications or high enterostomy output (>30cc/kg/d) may prohibit a premature infant from reaching 2 kg, additional data is needed to evaluate the safety of EC in infants <2 kg. The objective of this study was to evaluate postoperative outcomes in low body weight (<2 kg) infants undergoing EC compared to larger infants.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is a higher prevalence of anxiety-depressive disorders in women with BPS/IC (bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis) than in women with chronic non-neoplastic pain with or without fibromyalgia, to examine possible correlations between urological and psychiatric symptoms.

Methods: The patients included in the study were divided into two groups: 1) group 0: patients with an existing diagnosis of BPS/IC. BPS/IC was confirmed by reviewing medical record; group 1+2: patients with chronic non-neoplastic pain, suffering from fibromyalgia or other types of chronic pain (chronic arthralgia or lower back pain).

The aim of this study is to evaluate the internal consistency of sex estimation using metric (long bone length) and morphological () methodologies from different bones and across different archaeological populations from different regions. Sex was estimated using characteristics of the pelvis and compared with sex estimations using long bone length. Portuguese (659 females; 906 males) and English (141 females; 277 males) archaeological collections were analysed in this study.

We present a theoretical study of the surface magnon-polaritons at an interface formed by vacuum and a gyromagnetic medium (that can be either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic), when there is a graphene layer deposited between the media at the interface and a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the interface. The retarded-mode dispersion relations are calculated by considering a superposition of transverse magnetic and transversal electric electromagnetic waves in both media. Our results reveal the appearance of the surface magnon-polariton modes (with frequencies typically of a few GHz) that do not exist in the absence of graphene at the interface.

In this work, by considering superstatistics we investigate the short-range correlations (SRCs) and the fluctuations in the distribution of lengths of strings of nucleotides. To this end, a stochastic model provides the distributions of the size of the exons based on the q-Gamma and inverse q-Gamma distributions. Specifically, we define a time series for exon sizes to investigate the SRC and the fluctuations through the superstatistics distributions.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare, locally aggressive vascular tumor that mainly occurs during infancy or early childhood. Approximately 70% of cases are complicated by Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. Although osseous extension of the primary lesion is relatively common, primary bone involvement by KHE is rare.

We present a complex case of a neonate, delivered urgently for hydrops fetalis, with a large vascular mass of the extremity, diagnosed postnatally as a congenital hemangioma. The patient suffered immediate cardiac compromise and severe coagulopathy atypical for the diagnosis and subsequently died from these complications. Treatment was imperative but challenging due to a lack of a standardized treatment approach and few historical reports of equally critically ill patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervicofacial lymphatic malformations (CFLMs) are rare and can be life-threatening, but there's a lack of information on how to treat them effectively across multiple disciplines.* -
  • A study analyzed 63 children with CFLMs from 2004 to 2019, focusing on treatment outcomes after sclerotherapy, surgical resection, and medical management, with significant contour improvement defined as over 50% volume reduction.* -
  • Results showed that sclerotherapy was very effective for macrocystic CFLMs, while surgical resection was often needed for microcystic cases, and sirolimus showed promise as an additional treatment, especially for microcystic lesions, though further research is

Background/purpose: Abdominal lymphatic malformations (LM) are a rare subset of vascular anomaly caused by abnormal development of the lymphatic system. They are classified as macrocystic, microcystic or combination macrocystic and microcystic. Surgical resection, percutaneous sclerotherapy, and medical therapy are all employed to treat these complex and often symptomatic lesions.

We present a theoretical study for the surface magnon-polaritons in structures formed by graphene layer(s) on an insulating gyromagnetic medium (that can be either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic) surrounded by vacuum. We consider different doping levels to vary the Fermi energies in the graphene, including both semi-infinite and slab magnetic samples. Our results reveal a strong influence, exerted by the presence of graphene, on the surface magnon-polariton modes.

We describe a 17-year-old boy with capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation syndrome and a massive vascular malformation of the right chest wall, shoulder, and upper arm. Persistent growth of the malformation caused cutaneous ulcerations and recurrent massive bleeding episodes. We proceeded with a modified shoulder disarticulation preceded by ligation of the subclavian artery and innominate vein by median sternotomy.

Arthrodesis has been described as the gold standard of treatment for midfoot degenerative joint disease (DJD) but has also been associated with nonunion, increased tourniquet times, technical difficulty, and a long postoperative non-weightbearing period. Although it is postulated that a contracted gastrocnemius may cause midfoot pain, there are no reports of using the procedure as a primary treatment for midfoot DJD. The purpose of this study was to determine whether gastrocnemius recession resolved midfoot pain from osteoarthritis and eliminated the need for midfoot arthrodesis.

Background: Chalcones substituted by methoxyl groups have presented a broad spectrum of bioactivities, including antifungal, antibacterial and antiproliferative effects. However, a clear and unambiguous investigation about the relevance of this substituent on the chalcone framework has not been described.

Objective: The purpose of this work is to assess the antibacterial, antifungal and antiproliferative activities of the two series of seventeen synthesized regioisomeric methoxychalcones.

In this work, we address the study of phonons propagating on a one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattice, where the atoms are considered bounded by springs whose strength are modulated by equivalent Aubry-André hoppings. As an example, from the equations of motion, we obtained the equivalent phonon spectrum of the well known Hofstadter butterfly. We have also obtained extended, critical, and localized regimes in this spectrum.

We report an analysis of Homo sapiens DNA through the formalism of κ statistics, which encompasses power-law correlations and provides an optimization principle that permits us to model distinct physical systems; i.e., the power-law distribution of the length of DNA bases is calculated from a general model which follows arguments similar to those proposed in Maxwell's deduction of statistical distributions.

Background: To date, there is conflicting evidence that high-end "motion control" running shoes can correct and control rearfoot pronation. Many methods have been used to evaluate the efficacy of motion control footwear in reducing hindfoot pronation during gait, including stop-motion photography, three-dimensional camera kinematic analysis, and three-dimensional bone modeling using computed tomography. Until now, there have been no radiographic studies that examined the effect of motion control running shoes on the static posture of the foot.

Fetuses with obstructive neck and orofacial lesions have been delivered via an ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedure to facilitate securement of the airway while on placental circulation. Pregnancy-related cardiovascular changes and technical issues unique to an EXIT procedure increase fetal and maternal risks relative to a standard cesarean section. In order to circumvent such issues, fetal endoscopic intubation has been proposed.
