The global demand for lithium has soared in recent years due to the wide use of lithium batteries. To meet this demand, we herein report developing novel on-site sample preparation methods for the extraction of Li from relevant materials, including brine water, spodumene rock, as well as lithium-ion battery electrodes, and a DNAzyme-based fluorescent sensor for sensitive and robust detection of Li in these samples down to 1.4 mM (10 ppm) using a portable fluorometer.

Purpose Of Review: Dysphagia affects at least 1% of the pediatric population. This prevalence further increases in patients who are born prematurely or who have underlying neuromuscular or cardiopulmonary disorders. A multidisciplinary team approach, including an Otolaryngologist, can help promote an expedited diagnosis and therapeutic regimen, ensuring that the patient receives adequate nutrition needed for growth and development.

Patients with triple negative breast cancers (TNBCs)-highly aggressive tumors that do not express estrogen, progesterone, and human epidermal growth factor 2 receptors-have limited treatment options. Fewer than 30% of women with metastatic TNBC survive five years after their diagnosis, with a mortality rate within three months after a recurrence of 75%. Although TNBCs show a higher response to platinum therapy compared to other breast cancers, drug resistance remains a major obstacle; thus, platinum drugs with novel mechanisms are urgently needed.

Article Synopsis
  • Study aimed to assess how diagnostic TORS lingual tonsillectomy (DTLT) affects swallowing in patients with carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP).
  • A total of 27 patients with HPV-associated OPSCC underwent the procedure and had their swallowing evaluated using Modified Barium Swallow tests, compared against patients with identified primary tumors.
  • Results indicated that DTLT improved swallowing safety scores and reduced the incidence of moderate/severe dysphagia in CUP patients compared to those with base of tongue tumors, with a follow-up showing promising overall survival rates.

Species distribution modeling often involves high-dimensional environmental data. Large amounts of data and multicollinearity among covariates impose challenges to statistical models in variable selection for reliable inferences of the effects of environmental factors on the spatial distribution of species. Few studies have evaluated and compared the performance of multiple machine learning (ML) models in handling multicollinearity.

Introduction: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has been reported to occur at increased frequency in the pediatric sickle cell disease (SCD) population, likely secondary to ototoxic medication regimens and repeat sickling events that lead to end organ damage. Risk and protective factors of SNHL in this population are not fully characterized. The objective of this study was to describe audiology results in children with SCD and the prevalence and sequelae of SNHL.

Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent and may be more severe in children with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) compared to the general pediatric population.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe the therapeutic effects and complications of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A) for treatment of OSA in children with SCD.

Methods: A comprehensive database of pediatric SCD patients was reviewed to identify all patients who underwent T&A between 2010 and 2016.

The stimulation of angiotensin II (Ang II), the effector peptide of renin-angiotensin system, has been reported to increase the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) through the activation of the Ang II type 1 receptor (AT1R). In this study, we investigated whether hyperglycemia (HG, 33 mM glucose) in ARPE-19 cells could promote the expression of VEGF independently of Ang II through prorenin receptor (PRR), via an NADPH oxidase (Nox)-dependent mechanism. ARPE-19 cells were treated with the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor perindopril to block the synthesis of Ang II.

Purpose: The (pro)renin receptor (PRR), a component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), plays an important role in the physiologic and pathophysiological regulation of blood pressure and fluid/electrolyte homeostasis. The RAS including the PRR has been identified in retinal endothelial cells and other ocular tissues. In this study, the potential involvement of miRNAs in the posttranscriptional regulation of PRR was investigated in human retinal endothelial cells (hRECs) under high glucose (HG) conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of the drug combination doripenem and colistin against various strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae that produce carbapenemase, specifically KPC-2.
  • It found that certain genetic mutations in the ompK36 porin gene influenced how well these bacteria responded to the treatment, with the presence of specific mutations linked to higher levels of drug resistance.
  • The results indicate that strains with wild-type or other mutations typically had better responses to the drug combination, suggesting that genetic profiling could help predict treatment outcomes for infections caused by these bacteria.

Purpose: In recent years, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to play important roles in a broad range of biologic processes, including oxidative stress-mediated ocular diseases. In addition, the polyphenolic compound curcumin has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, antiproliferative, and proapoptotic activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of curcumin on the expression profiles of miRNAs in ARPE-19 cells exposed to oxidative stress.
