Pilot Study Exploring if an Augmented Reality NeedleTrainer Device Improves Novice Performance of a Simulated Central Venous Catheter Insertion on a Phantom.

Introduction Needle insertion and visualisation skills needed for ultrasound (US)-guided procedures can be challenging to acquire. The novel NeedleTrainer device superimposes a digital holographic needle on a real-time US image display without puncturing a surface. The aim of this randomised control study was to compare the success of trainees performing a simulated central venous catheter insertion on a phantom either with or without prior NeedleTrainer device practice.

Clinical metabolomics for inborn errors of metabolism.

Metabolism is a highly regulated process that provides nutrients to cells and essential building blocks for the synthesis of protein, DNA and other macromolecules. In healthy biological systems, metabolism maintains a steady state in which the concentrations of metabolites are relatively constant yet are subject to metabolic demands and environmental stimuli. Rare genetic disorders, such as inborn errors of metabolism (IEM), cause defects in regulatory enzymes or proteins leading to metabolic pathway disruption and metabolite accumulation or deficiency.

Towards quality assurance and quality control in untargeted metabolomics studies.

We describe here the agreed upon first development steps and priority objectives of a community engagement effort to address current challenges in quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) in untargeted metabolomic studies. This has included (1) a QA and QC questionnaire responded to by the metabolomics community in 2015 which recommended education of the metabolomics community, development of appropriate standard reference materials and providing incentives for laboratories to apply QA and QC; (2) a 2-day 'Think Tank on Quality Assurance and Quality Control for Untargeted Metabolomic Studies' held at the National Cancer Institute's Shady Grove Campus and (3) establishment of the Metabolomics Quality Assurance and Quality Control Consortium (mQACC) to drive forward developments in a coordinated manner.
