Hypertonic dehydration is associated with muscle wasting and synthesis of organic osmolytes. We recently showed a metabolic shift to amino acid production and urea cycle activation in coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19), consistent with the aestivation response. The aim of the present investigation was to validate the metabolic shift and development of long-term physical outcomes in the non-COVID cohort of the Biobanque Québécoise de la COVID-19 (BQC19).

Despite forming an integral part of sepsis management, fluid resuscitation may also lead to volume overload, which in turn is associated with increased mortality.

Hyaluronan, an endogenous glycosaminoglycan with high affinity to water, has not been tested previously as adjuvant to fluid resuscitation in sepsis. In a prospective, parallel-grouped, blinded model of porcine peritonitis sepsis, we randomized animals to intervention with adjuvant hyaluronan (add-on to standard therapy, n = 8) or 0.

Apart from source control and broad-spectrum antibiotics, management is based on fluid resuscitation and vasoactive drugs. Fluid resuscitation implicates the risk of volume overload, which in turn is associated with longer stay in intensive care, prolonged use of mechanical ventilation and increased mortality.

There is currently no pharmacologic treatment for the condition. The antisecretory peptide AF-16 reduces oedema in experimental traumatic brain injury.
