Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to enhance outcomes for newborns with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) by adopting an eat, sleep, console (ESC) approach and changing hospital monitoring policies.
  • - A chart review showed that neonates receiving the ESC intervention had shorter hospital stays (average 4.53 days) compared to those under the previous monitoring method (average 7.45 days), although more in the ESC group were given morphine.
  • - Nurses generally reacted positively to the ESC implementation, believing it was both safe and manageable, indicating a successful policy shift in the hospital.

Background: Sodium fluctuations in very preterm neonates and their neurodevelopmental consequences are not well described.

Methods: We assessed the changes in plasma sodium and glucose in the first days of life in very preterm neonates and studied the association of glucose-corrected plasma sodium fluctuations on neurodevelopmental outcomes. We included 147 consecutive neonates born before 29 weeks of gestation in our center and retrospectively obtained plasma sodium, glucose, and glucose-corrected sodium levels.

Purpose: Over the last few decades, several articles have examined the feasibility of attempting primary reduction and closure of gastroschisis without general anesthesia (GA). We aimed to systematically evaluate the impact of forgoing routine intubation and GA during primary bedside reduction and closure of gastroschisis.

Methods: The primary outcome was closure success.

Article Synopsis
  • Preterm birth is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and early death, with evidence indicating changes in left ventricle (LV) structure and function in individuals born preterm.
  • A study of 86 young adults born before 30 weeks of gestation found smaller LV dimensions and reduced stroke volume and cardiac output compared to 85 full-term controls.
  • While some LV function markers did not differ significantly after accounting for body size, the findings suggest that monitoring these changes could help in preventing cardiovascular issues in those born preterm.

Article Synopsis
  • Preterm birth may negatively impact the cardiovascular system, but the long-term effects on heart function in adulthood are not well understood.!* -
  • A study analyzed ECG data from young adults born term and preterm during rest, exercise, and recovery, finding that only heart rate differed significantly, with no severe QT interval prolongations.!* -
  • The study concludes that there are no significant electrocardiographic differences between those born preterm and term, suggesting that QT-prolonging medications can be used without special caution in preterm individuals.!*
