- Hyperplasia of intestinal smooth muscle cells (ISMC) occurs during inflammation and may be regulated by nitric oxide (NO) from enteric neurons, specifically through neuronal NO synthase (nNOS).
- Chemical NO donors were found to inhibit growth of ISMC, while the use of inhibitors and stimulators showed that the growth regulation primarily relies on a cGMP-dependent mechanism, with some involvement of cAMP.
- In a colitis model, a reduction in nNOS axons was observed before the onset of ISMC hyperplasia, suggesting that decreased nNOS expression could contribute to this excessive growth during inflammation.
