Psychotropic medication prescribed for children and young people with eating disorders in mental health in-patient services: a quality improvement programme.

The aims of this quality improvement programme were to enable providers of mental health in-patient services for children and young people in England to review their prescribing practice alongside the views and experiences of children, young people and their parent carers. Three online tools were developed. First was a medication census tool to be completed by provider clinicians to capture prescribing practices around psychotropic medication.

Validation of predictive factors of dysphagia risk following thermal burns: a prospective cohort study.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to prospectively evaluate the validity and reliability of a risk factor model developed for use in predicting dysphagia risk within the first 24 h after injury/hospitalisation in patients with thermal burns.

Method(s): Three hundred and fifty six patients with thermal burns, with or without inhalation injury, who were consecutively admitted to and received management at a quaternary state-wide burn center over a 12 month period, were included. Patients were reviewed for dysphagia risk by nursing staff using an established set of predictive factors.

A randomized controlled pilot study comparing aqueous cream with a beeswax and herbal oil cream in the provision of relief from postburn pruritus.

Postburn itch is reported to affect up to 87% of the burn population. Although treatments for postburn itch are multimodal, they remain consistently ineffective. However, recent anecdotal evidence from several outpatients at a tertiary referral hospital suggests that a cream combining beeswax and several herbal oils may be effective in the minimization of postburn itch.

Control of reflection at an optical interface in the absence of total internal reflection for a retroreflective display application.

Reflection at an interface between two materials can be modulated by means of varying the optical properties at the interface. We have studied this modulation of the reflected light with an aim to develop a flashing retroreflector for roadside conspicuity applications. Reflectance modulation has previously been studied under the conditions of total internal reflection (TIR), where a light-absorbing material placed in the associated evanescent wave region can be used to attenuate the intensity of the reflected light.

Anesthesia for pericardial window in a pregnant patient with cardiac tamponade and mediastinal mass.

Purpose: To present a case report of anesthesia for pericardial window surgery for acute cardiac tamponade in a patient with an anterior mediastinal mass in late pregnancy.

Clinical Features: A 34-yr-old gravida 2, para 1 patient presented at 29 weeks gestation with dyspnea, orthopnea, chest pain, and cough. Investigations showed an anterior mediastinal mass due to Hodgkin's disease.

Ximelagatran versus warfarin for the prevention of venous thromboembolism after total knee arthroplasty. A randomized, double-blind trial.

Background: Warfarin is used for prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. However, it is associated with rates of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of approximately 38% to 55% and requires routine coagulation monitoring and frequent dose adjustment. Ximelagatran, an oral direct thrombin inhibitor, has shown promising efficacy and tolerability in patients undergoing total hip or knee arthroplasty.
