Despite the ever-growing research interest in polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) as green plastic alternatives, our understanding of the regulatory mechanisms governing PHA synthesis, storage, and degradation in the model organism Ralstonia eutropha remains limited. Given its importance for central carbon metabolism, PHA homeostasis is probably controlled by a complex network of transcriptional regulators. Understanding this fine-tuning is the key for developing improved PHA production strains thereby boosting the application of PHAs.

Background: Refractory Ceramic fibres (RCF) are man-made mineral fibres used in high performance thermal insulation applications. Analogous to asbestos fibres, RCF are respirable, show a pleural drift and can persist in human lung tissue for more than 20 years after exposure. Pleural changes such as localised or diffuse pleural thickening as well as pleural calcification were reported.

Adoptive transfer of regulatory T cells (Treg) is a promising new therapeutic option to treat detrimental inflammatory conditions after transplantation and during autoimmune disease. To reach sufficient cell yield for treatment, isolated autologous or allogenic Tregs need to be expanded extensively during manufacturing of the Treg product. However, repetitive cycles of restimulation and prolonged culture have been shown to impact T cell phenotypes, functionality and fitness.

We report a novel method for the direct synthesis of mono- and bis-arylated alkynes utilizing catalytically activated CaC as the alkyne component. This fluoride-activated cross coupling reaction provides advantages over existing methods regarding operational simplicity, use of readily available starting materials, and low cost.

The neural underpinnings of anorexia nervosa (AN) are poorly understood. Results from existing functional brain imaging studies using disorder-relevant food- or body-stimuli have been heterogeneous and may be biased due to varying compliance or strategies of the participants. In this study, resting state functional connectivity imaging was used.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is defined by signs and symptoms of inflammation within the affected joint. The aim of this study is to determine the mRNA expression levels of selected cytokines and matrix-metalloproteinases of cells found in synovial fluid (SF) obtained from osteoarthritic knee joints compared to healthy controls.

Methods: SF was obtained from 40 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty due to evident OA and from 10 healthy controls.

Skeletal muscle is continually subjected to microinjuries that must be repaired to maintain structure and function. Fluorescent dye influx after laser injury of muscle fibers is a commonly used assay to study membrane repair. This approach reveals that initial resealing only takes a few seconds.

We investigated eight families with a novel subtype of congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL4) of whom five members had died from sudden cardiac death during their teenage years. ECG studies revealed features of long-QT syndrome, bradycardia, as well as supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias. Further symptoms comprised myopathy with muscle rippling, skeletal as well as smooth-muscle hypertrophy, leading to impaired gastrointestinal motility and hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in some children.
