A telehealth yoga program for older adults in rural Wisconsin: intervention development and process outcomes.

Although yoga improves physical functioning, balance, and quality of life in older adults, rural residents are less likely to participate due to issues related to availability, access, and beliefs regarding yoga practice. To address these barriers, we worked with community partners to adapt a yoga program designed for older adults for telehealth delivery. In this report, intervention development and process outcomes are presented.

A qualitative study of family members' perspectives regarding decision-making for nursing home residents' care.

Purpose: We explored how family caregivers perceive decision-making regarding the care of nursing home residents.

Methods: This qualitative study used Flemming's Gadamerian-based research method. In person semi-structured interviews about decision-making concerning residents' care were conducted with 13 family members (nine women, four men) of residents of three Norwegian nursing homes.

Residents' experiences of paternalism in nursing homes.

Background: Interest in strengthening residents' autonomy in nursing homes is intensifying and professional caregivers' experience ethical dilemmas when the principles of beneficence and autonomy conflict. This increased focus requires expanded knowledge of how residents experience decision-making in nursing homes and how being subject to paternalism affects residents' dignity.

Strategies to manage cognitive dissonance when experiencing resistiveness to care in people living with dementia: A qualitative study.

Aims: To explore the experiences of healthcare personnel when they face resistiveness to care in people living with dementia in nursing homes.

Design: The study has a qualitative explorative design.

Methods: Three focus group interviews were conducted in June 2019.

Effect of coenzyme Q10 in Europeans with chronic heart failure: A sub-group analysis of the Q-SYMBIO randomized double-blind trial.

Background: Geographical differences in patient characteristics, management and outcomes in heart failure (HF) trials are well recognized. The aim of this study was to assess the consistency of the treat- ment effect of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in the European sub-population of Q-SYMBIO, a randomized double-blind multinational trial of treatment with CoQ10, in addition to standard therapy in chronic HF.

Methods: Patients with moderate to severe HF were randomized to CoQ10 300 mg daily or placebo in addition to standard therapy.

Nordic homecare nursing from the perspective of homecare nurses-a meta-ethnography.

The pressure on homecare nursing in the Nordic countries has increased in recent years because of a reorganisation of healthcare systems that has put a focus on very early discharge from hospital as well as demographic changes. This article details an analysis of the findings of 13 published qualitative research reports about Nordic homecare nurses' experiences of their work. Using a process of meta-ethnography, the authors identify five themes within the primary research: home care as a professional practice on foreign ground; home care as a massive time constraint; home care as fair rationing; home care as relationships with relatives as fellow players or opponents; and home care as latent paternalism.

Nudging in nursing.

Nudging is a concept in behavioural science, political theory and economics that proposes indirect suggestions to try to achieve non-forced compliance and to influence the decision making and behaviour of groups and individuals. Researchers in medical ethics are currently discussing whether nudging is ethically permissible in healthcare. In this article, we examine current knowledge about how different decisions (rational and pre-rational decisions, major and minor decisions) are made and how this decision-making process pertains to patients.

Tetrahydrocarbazoles are a novel class of potent P-type ATPase inhibitors with antifungal activity.

We have identified a series of tetrahydrocarbazoles as novel P-type ATPase inhibitors. Using a set of rationally designed analogues, we have analyzed their structure-activity relationship using functional assays, crystallographic data and computational modeling. We found that tetrahydrocarbazoles inhibit adenosine triphosphate (ATP) hydrolysis of the fungal H+-ATPase, depolarize the fungal plasma membrane and exhibit broad-spectrum antifungal activity.

Production and Screening of Monoclonal Peptide Antibodies.

Hybridoma technology is a remarkable and indispensable tool for generating high-quality monoclonal antibodies. Hybridoma-derived monoclonal antibodies not only serve as powerful research and diagnostic reagents, but have also emerged as the most rapidly expanding class of therapeutic biologicals. In this chapter, an overview of hybridoma technology and the laboratory procedures used routinely for hybridoma production and antibody screening are presented, including characterization of peptide antibodies.

Changes in morphometry and association between whole-body fatty acids and steroid hormone profiles in relation to bioaccumulation patterns in salmon larvae exposed to perfluorooctane sulfonic or perfluorooctane carboxylic acids.

In the present study, we have used salmon embryos whose continuous exposure to waterborne PFOA or PFOS at 100 μg/L started as freshly fertilized eggs, and lasted for a total of 52 days. PFOS and PFOA were dissolved in methanol (carrier vehicle) whose concentration never exceeded 0.01% of total tank volume.

Plasma and urine concentrations of bioactive dietary benzoxazinoids and their glucuronidated conjugates in rats fed a rye bread-based diet.

Thorough knowledge of the absorption and metabolism of dietary benzoxazinoids is needed to understand their health-promoting effects. In this study, the fates of these bioactive compounds were examined by LC-MS/MS in plasma, urine, and feces after ingesting a daily dose of 4780 ± 68 nmol benzoxazinoids from rye bread using Wistar rats as a model. HBOA-glc (2-β-D-glucopyranosyloxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one) was the predominant benzoxazinoid in the plasma (74 ± 27 nmol/L), followed by DIBOA-glc (2-β-D-glucopyranosyloxy-4-hydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one) and HBOA.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on lipid β-oxidation and oxidative stress responses in Atlantic salmon liver and kidney tissues. We quantified changes in the expression levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) and acyl-CoA oxidase (ACOX1) enzyme whose transcription is induced by PPARs. In addition, we analyzed gene expression patterns for enzymatic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase: SOD, catalase: CAT and glutathione peroxidase: GPx).

Synthesis and quantitation of six phenolic amides in Amaranthus spp.

Cinnamoylphenethylamines are phenolic amides in which cinnamic acid provides the acid moiety and phenethylamine the amine moiety. Single ion monitoring (SIM) in LC-MS was performed on amaranth leaf extracts. Masses corresponding to sets of regioisomers, including previously reported compounds, were examined.

Biotransformation of PCBs in Arctic seabirds: characterization of phase I and II pathways at transcriptional, translational and activity levels.

Arctic seabirds are exposed to a wide range of halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs). Exposure occurs mainly through food intake, and many pollutants accumulate in lipid-rich tissues. Little is known about how HOCs are biotransformed in arctic seabirds.

Environmentally relevant concentrations of selected polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardant congeners and their hydroxylated (OH) and methoxylated (MeO) analogues that can perturb thyroid hormone-dependent processes were comparatively examined with respect to competitive binding with thyroxine (T(4)) and 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T(3)) thyroid hormones (THs) on recombinant human and gull albumin and transthyretin transport proteins. The liver tissue was from glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) from Norway and herring gulls (Larus argentatus) from the Great Lakes of North America. We isolated, cloned, sequenced, purified, and expressed the cDNA (cDNA) of albumin from liver of herring and glaucous gull.

Food restriction in young Japanese quails: effects on growth, metabolism, plasma thyroid hormones and mRNA species in the thyroid hormone signalling pathway.

Young birds, in their post-natal growth period, may reduce their growth and metabolism when facing a food shortage. To examine how such responses can be mediated by endocrine-related factors, we exposed Japanese quail chicks to food restriction for either 2 days (age 6-8 days) or 5 days (age 6-11 days). We then measured growth and resting metabolic rate (RMR), and circulating 3,3',5-triiodo-l-thyronine (T3) and 3,5,3',5'-tetraiodothyronine (T4) levels as well as expression patterns of genes involved in growth (insulin-like growth factor-I: IGF-I) and thyroid hormone signalling (thyroid-stimulating hormone-beta: TSHbeta, type II iodothyronine deiodinase: D2, thyroid hormone receptors isoforms: TRalpha and TRbeta).

Neural aromatase transcript and protein levels in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are modulated by the ubiquitous water pollutant, 4-nonylphenol.

At present, there are no known direct occurrences of nonylphenol (NP) in nature. Therefore, its presence in nature is solely a consequence of human activities. NP is generated through degradation of alkylphenol ethoxylates released mainly from textile, metal working, institutional cleansing and laundry cleaning, but few data on the amount of the release is available.

Allelochemicals in rye (Secale cereale L.): cultivar and tissue differences in the production of benzoxazinoids and phenolic acids.

In the present study, a range of benzoxazinoid compounds and phenolic acids, all known to be allelochemicals of rye, were identified and quantified in 13 rye cultivars grown at three different localities. Plant samples were collected in the spring at the time when an autumn-sown rye cover crop would be incorporated into the soil. Significant variations in content among shoots and roots were seen for all of the secondary metabolites, with non-methoxy-substituted benzoxazinoids (BX) dominating the shoots, whereas comparable levels were found in the concentrations of BX and methoxy-substituted benzoxazinoids (MBX) in the roots.

Glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) from Svalbard, Norway (marine), and herring gulls (Larus argentatus) from the Laurentian Great Lakes (freshwater) of North America are differentially exposed to persistent and bioaccumulative anthropogenic contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants and metabolic products. Such compounds can potentially perturb hormone transport via binding interactions with proteins such as transthyretin (TTR, prealbumin). In this present study, we isolated, cloned and sequenced TTR cDNA from the brain and liver of two species (herring and glaucous gull), which, to our knowledge, is the first report describing the TTR nucleic acid and amino acid sequences from any gull species.
