We present a novel method to image the vasculature of the anterior segment of the eye using a non-invasive optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) system with a modified lens system. This system utilises the Heidelberg Spectralis OCTA and a 3D printed lens mount holding a simple biconvex lens in place to allow capture of images in the anterior segment.

Nasolacrimal duct screening to minimize post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis.

Background: To examine unrecognized nasolacrimal duct obstruction as a risk factor for developing endophthalmitis post-cataract surgery in order to assess the value of preoperative lacrimal system screening.

Design: Prospective case-control study.

Participants: A random sample of patients undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery (control group) and a consecutive series of patients admitted to our hospital with post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis.

Purpose: The mechanism by which eosinophils adhere to the ocular surface during allergic inflammation is unknown. This study examined whether the incubation of human conjunctival epithelial cells (HCEs) with tears from allergic subjects promotes eosinophil adhesion, and it examined the effect of treatment with olopatadine on this process.

Methods: Allergic subjects (n = 6) and nonallergic subjects (n = 4) were treated in season for 1 week with olopatadine in one eye while the other eye remained untreated.

Urokinase-type plasminogen activator modulates airway eosinophil adhesion in asthma.

Eosinophils migrate from the vascular circulation to the inflamed airways during asthma exacerbations. While the mechanism(s) of this process is not known, the expression of urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) has been found to modulate neutrophil adhesion and migration to inflammatory sites. We hypothesized that increased expression of uPAR and its ligand, uPA, enhance eosinophil adhesion in patients with asthma.
