Aim: A significant loss of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) after a hip fracture has been reported. The aim of the present study was to identify specific predictors for low IADL after a hip fracture, in order to target better postoperative care for these patients.
Methods: A prospective observational cohort study of 480 hip fracture patients was carried out.
This case report describes a successful two-stage treatment in a 75-year-old male with a displaced neck of femur fracture, also suffering from an active chronic osteomyelitis of the ipsilateral calcaneus. In our case, a below-knee amputation was performed first, followed by total hip arthroplasty two weeks later. At 15-month follow-up, full recovery of the prefracture level of activities of daily living without significant impairment was obtained.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Although needle aspiration of calcific deposits (NACD) has proven to be an effective treatment for calcific tendinitis of the rotator cuff (CTRC) in patients who are resistant to conservative treatment, little is known about the effectiveness of NACD in terms of complete relief of symptoms and the effectiveness of repeated NACD procedures. Furthermore, analyses of complications of the procedure in large series are scarce.
Methods: 431 consecutive patients with symptomatic CTRC treated by NACD were included in this retrospective cohort study.
Introduction: Although NACD has proven to be an effective minimal invasive treatment for calcific tendinitis of the rotator cuff, little is known about the factors associated with treatment failure or the need for multiple procedures.
Methods: Patients with symptomatic calcific tendinitis who were treated by NACD were evaluated in a retrospective cohort study. Demographic details, medical history, sonographic and radiographic findings were collected from patient files.
Background: Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is a surgical option for an arthropathy secondary to a bleeding disorder. The literature consists of small case series. Our series provides further understanding into the outcomes of TEA in this population of patients.

Design: We conducted a literature search using Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and clinicaltrials.gov.
Background: Interposition arthroplasty (IA) is mostly performed in younger patients where total joint replacement is contraindicated and an arthrodesis is unattractive. The outcome and complications of an IA were evaluated.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 18 consecutive cases of interposition arthroplasty (IA) (one case was excluded as a result of incomplete records).
Purpose: This paper reports the external validation of a recently developed instrument, the Discharge of Hip fracture Patients score (DHP) that predicts discharge location on admission in patients living in their own home prior to hip fracture surgery.
Methods: The DHP (maximum score 100 points) was applied to 125 hip fracture patients aged 50 or more years admitted to an academic centre in the northern part of The Netherlands (Groningen cohort). The characteristics of this cohort, sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive value (PPV, NPV) of the DHP for discharge to an alternative location (DAL) were calculated and compared with the original cohort of hip fracture patients from the western part of The Netherlands (Delft cohort).
Aim: To measure functional recovery and determine risk factors for failure to return to the prefracture level of mobility of hip fracture patients 1 year postoperatively.
Methods: A prospective cohort follow-up study of 390 hip fracture patients aged 65 years and older was carried out. Patients were stratified in categories based on prefracture mobility: mobile without aid, with aid in- and outdoors, or only mobile indoors.
Aim: To compare clinical characteristics and outcome of nonagenarian hip fracture patients with younger patients aged 65-89 years.
Methods: This was a cohort follow-up study of admissions for a hip fracture between 2005-2010 (mean follow up of 3.5 years) in two teaching hospitals in The Netherlands; 230 nonagenarians and 1014 patients aged 65-89 years were included.

Purpose: To report risk factors, 1-year and overall risk for a contralateral hip and other osteoporosis-related fractures in a hip fracture population.
Methods: An observational study on 1,229 consecutive patients of 50 years and older, who sustained a hip fracture between January 2005 and June 2009. Fractures were scored retrospectively for 2005-2008 and prospectively for 2008-2009.
Purpose: This paper reports on the development and validity of a new instrument, called the discharge of hip fracture patients score (DHP), that predicts at admission the discharge location in patients living in their own home prior to hip fracture surgery.
Methods: A total of 310 patients aged 50 years and above were included. Risk factors for discharge to an alternative location (DAL) were analysed with a multivariable regression analysis taking the admission variables into account with different weights based on the estimates.
Introduction: Long-term place of residence after hip fracture is not often described in literature. The goal of this study was to identify risk factors, known at admission, for failure to return to the pre-fracture place of residence of hip fracture patients in the first year after a hip fracture.
Methods: This is a prospective longitudinal study of 444 consecutive admissions of hip fracture patients aged ≥ 65 years.
Objective: The Risk Model for Delirium (RD) score is a 10-item questionnaire that allocates hip fracture patients after admission to hospital to be either at high or at low risk for delirium. This allows targeted preventive actions. Clinical reliability, validity and feasibility of the RD score are discussed.

Important parameters are the amount and direction of displacement and the necessary reduction of fragments during surgery. These are patient-specific parameters and are difficult to determine using traditional modalities such as radiographs and computed tomography (CT).

An isolated avulsion is rare, as most avulsions occur in combination with other (more severe) injuries such as fractures of the scapula body or neck, coracoid process, glenoid or humerus. These injuries are mostly seen in high-energy trauma cases and need their own specific treatment.

Introduction: Femoroacetabular impingement leads to limited hip motion, pain and progressive damage to the labrum. Assessment of the amount and location of excessive ossification can be difficult, and removal does not always lead to pain relief and an increase of function. One of the challenges ahead is to discover why certain cases have poor outcomes.

A recent Cochrane analysis stresses the importance of further research into the relative merits of these techniques. We hypothesise that non-cemented hemiarthroplasty will result in at least the same technical-functional outcome and complication rate, with a shorter operation time.
